About this book

Imaging plays an increasingly vital role in the management of athletes aiding diagnosis, injury grading and prognosis, as well as guiding therapy. These processes apply equally to elite and recreational athletes young and old. I have always found that understanding the relevance of imaging fndings is easier when accompanied by knowledge of the anatomy, biomechanics and pathological processes involved in injury formation. This textbook has been developed with both radiologists and sports cli- cians in mind and aims to bring all these processes together and illustrate the spectrum of injury and associated clinical features for specifc anatomical areas. Internationally recognized musculoskeletal experts have contributed chapters which provide an imaging and clinical overview of the most relevant joint, bone and soft tissue athletic injuries. There is guidance for the reader on why specifc injuries occur, how to identify the optimal imaging evaluation and how to interpret the subsequent imaging fndings. Acute and overuse injuries are discussed as well as the premature degenerative processes that occur in athletes. State-of-the-art imaging techniques and fndings are presented including the use of muscu- skeletal ultrasound, conventional MR imaging and MR arthrography. Therapeutic ima- guided intervention using fuoroscopy, CT, and ultrasound is also discussed. This balance of techniques should allow a clinician whose practice focuses on one particular modality to become aware not only of that technique’s abilities but other modalities and their capabilities and limitations. Reviews

From the reviews:

“This teaching guide and radiology atlas for sports medicine practitioners is organized into nine joint-specific chapters with additional chapters on postoperative imaging and ultrasound-guided injections. … developed for both radiologists and sports clinicians. … The strength of this book is in the way it explains anatomy, mechanism of injury, and injury classification prior to presenting the radiologic images. Diagrams accompany the anatomical review and tables summarize imaging findings for particular diagnoses.” (Vijay Jotwani, Doody’s Review Service, August, 2010)

“The textbook explains to both radiologists and sports clinicians the anatomy, biomechanics, and pathology relevant to using various forms of imaging in diagnosis, injury grading, prognosis, and guiding therapy. Radiologists from Britain, the US, and Canada also suggest how to determine which imaging technique will be most useful in a particular situation, and how to interpret the results. … Many very high quality images are provided … .” (SciTech Book News, December, 2010)

“Essential Radiology for Sports Medicine provides a concise and well-formulated review of the imaging of common sports-related injuries. … a helpful introductory guide for radiologists and sports practitioners unfamiliar with the sonographic appearance of normal and abnormal structures. … Readers will be impressed with the quality of the imaging and the clear discussions. … is well-suited to residents and fellows with a particular interest in sports medicine as well as to the practicing radiologist and sports clinician.” (Sarah D. Bixby, Journal of the American Medical Association, January, 2011)

“Provide an overview of imaging findings in sports medicine for radiologists, other physicians, and surgeons. … presenting a level of detail close to that required in the day-to-day work of a musculoskeletal radiologist or sports medicine clinician ineasily accessible form. It will be particularly useful to trainees in these disciplines as a first or introductory book and can serve as a quick refresher or update book for experienced practitioners. The book is highly readable and should find its way onto many bookshelves.” (Jacob L. Jaremko, Radiology, Vol. 260 (3), September, 2011)
