About this book

The Update compiles the most recent, widespread developments of experimental and clinical research and practice in one comprehensive reference book. The chapters are written by well recognized experts in the field of intensive care and emergency medicine. It is addressed to everyone involved in internal medicine, anesthesia, surgery, pediatrics, intensive care and emergency medicine.

Reviews

Doody's Review

**Features**

The 64 chapters are divided by type of content with reviews on basic science applications and more direct application of critical care physiology to the management of patients with specific problems. Cardiopulmonary physiology is emphasized with groups of chapters covering respiratory failure, acute lung injury, circulatory shock, resuscitation, blood transfusion, microvascular physiology and more general cardiorespiratory monitoring techniques. Sepsis also figures prominently and several chapters on ICU quality conclude.

Individual presentations are well written and illustrated. Tables and line drawings are used frequently. The occasional black-and-white photographs are of good quality. A reference list of original work accompanies each chapter.

References date to within a year of publication. The table of contents groups chapters by type of content while a subject index of approximately 10 pages provides adequate access to content.

**Assessment**

This is an excellent complement to a standard critical care text. Fast breaking developments in important clinical areas are reviewed with effective citation of current literature.
