About this book

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause for the loss of central seeing with humans beyond the age of 50 in the industrial nations. A triplication of the patients is expected in the next 25 years. Especially in the last couple of years the standard of knowledge regarding etiology, risk factors, diagnostics and therapy of this retina illness has substantially grown which is presented in this up-to-date multi-authored work. Apart from epidemiologically identified risk factors both the various pathophysiological aspects and clinical manifestations and angiographic characteristics are clearly represented and in line with standard usage. Furthermore, the different therapeutic approaches are treated, which include proven procedures as laser therapy and seeing-aids systems, in addition to latest methods in the area of the pharmacology, the photo-dynamic therapy, transpupil thermal therapy (TTT) and the macular surgery. The volume is well-illustrated and tables and summaries round up the representation.

Reviews

From the reviews:

"It is appropriate time for an authoritative text to be written to help the ophthalmic community to plan for the expanding workload and to select the best imaging and treatment techniques for their patients. This excellent book fulfills that role very well and offers value to both medical retinal specialists and interested generalists. … Overall, this book is carefully thought out, with useful summaries and bullet points, and well written, a tribute to the editors … . Value for money." (Mr John Talbot, Eye News, Vol. 10 (6), 2004)

"The 234-page book contains 15 chapters written by well-recognised expert researchers and clinicians in the field. … The book is easy to read and concise. … AMD is acquiring an increasing importance to both the general ophthalmologist, researcher and retinal specialist due to the rapid emergence of new treatments and the exciting discoveries … . I would recommend this book as an excellent overview of all areas of AMD for retina specialists and researchers as well as for residents and fellows in ophthalmology." (Adnan Tufail, Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 245, 2007)
