Overview

The journal publishes original research and policy perspectives on ethical issues involved in agriculture, food production and consumption, environmental practices, and human-animal interactions. JAGE is committed to publishing high-quality academic works, while recognizing and promoting disciplinary diversity in approaching the ethical issues within its scope. Contributions from various academic disciplines – as well as multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary pieces – may therefore be eligible for publication in JAGE, provided that they demonstrate an explicit normative perspective. This includes (but is not limited to) contributions grounded in social justice theory, science and technology studies, (eco)feminism, environmental ethics, animal ethics, and critical animal studies.  Papers published in JAGE have applied theoretical aims or aim to inform agricultural and environmental policy decisions, practices, advocacy efforts, or educational initiatives.

The journal welcomes submissions that focus on ethical issues with respect to (e.g.):

i.  Agricultural production systems (e.g. animal husbandry, aquaculture, insect farming, and crop farming systems).

ii. Consumption styles and diets (e.g. meat consumption, vegetarianism, veganism).

iii. The safety, availability, and affordability of food and feed.

iv. Technologies with (possible) applications in animal agriculture (e.g. biotechnologies, robotics, artificial intelligence).

v. Agricultural policies and regulations on national and international levels.

vi. Approaches to environmental sustainability, including climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.

vii. Ecological conservation efforts and the modification of ecosystems.

viii. Knowledge production practices with respect to agriculture.

ix. Human-animal relations in agriculture, environmental protection and conservation, but also more broadly.

Papers should be written in a clear style so that they are accessible to the readership of JAGE, which spans the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences, and includes policymakers, regulatory agency personnel, professionals, and activists.

All submissions will be subject to double shielded review, the average peer review time is 3 months.

The Journal of Agriculture and Environmental Ethics publishes the following kinds of articles:

i. Original research articles (no more than 8,000 words)
ii. Policy Perspectives that analyze a national (or international) agricultural or environmental policy. Policy Perspectives co-authored by established senior researchers and graduate students are preferred. Perspective pieces should be no more than 2,000 words. (Potential authors of Policy Perspectives should contact the editor to express their interest.)
iii. Guest edited collections comprising of high-quality thematically related papers on agricultural or environmental issues that were presented at workshops, conferences, or symposiums. Potential guest-editors should contact the Editor-in-Chief with their expression of interest.
