About the Editor

Professor David L Hawksworth CBE 

A past-President of International Union of Biological Sciences, and Honorary President of the International Mycological Association, he has served as a Council Member of English Nature, and co-ordinated key sections of UNEP’s Global Biodiversity Assessment (1995).

His publications record includes Changes in the Wildlife of Britain and Ireland (2001), and he has served as Editor-in-Chief of Biodiversity and Conservation since 2006. Amongst his numerous medals and awards are the Bicentenary Medal of the Linnean Society of London, Acharius Medal of the British Lichen Society, Ainsworth Medal of the International Mycological Association, and appointment as Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for services to science. He was the last Director of the intergovernmental International Mycological Institute, and subsequently worked as a professor in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He has travelled widely and given courses and undertaken fieldwork in all continents (except Antarctica).

He now lives on the edge of the North Downs in Surrey, and currently has honorary positions at both the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Natural History Museum, London, as well as Visiting Professorships in Jilin Agricultural University (Chanchung, China) and the University of Southampton (UK).
