This new Springer subseries of the GeoJournal Library presents advancements in geodesign including spatial data processing, manipulation and application in iterative planning and design processes. In addition, it offers a space to discuss the cultural and political impact of geodesign by means of practical experiences and research projects, and to mark theories on the adoption of 'geodesign thinking’ through educational and organizational reforms. Geodesign is an iterative design and planning method driven by geospatial technologies. Whereas conventional planning and design processes separate context analysis, design, and evaluation into explicit steps, geodesign combines these into one process through digital simulations, spatial analysis, integrated spatial modeling, and multi-dimensional visualizations. Context exploration, spatial analysis and design evaluation are brought closer together through innovations in geospatial sciences to yield fitter, more robust and context-sensitive design solutions. Explorations in geodesign are necessary to enable a collective and increasingly democratic framing of the design problem and its solutions. This, in turn, allows a more intelligent planning, management, development, protection, and compensation for our quality of life. The aim of this relatively new field of research is to string together separate developments in spatial planning, architecture, and urban design with information technology and geospatial sciences. The geodesign framework is applied in domains such as archaeology, hydrology, transport planning, and public health.
