    Founded by Antonio Sanna

European Journal of Epidemiology, published for the first time in 1985, serves as a forum on the epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases and their control. The results of epidemiologic studies are essential arguments for action in the field of public health policies and efforts are made to bring the journal to the decision makers' attention. The journal is also a source of material for those who are actively engaged in teaching epidemiology.

The journal covers the different fields of epidemiology, a science which has always been multidisciplinary by nature: contributions are encouraged from the fields of public health planning and control, economy, preventive medicine, clinical trials, vaccinology, psychology, molecular biology, mathematical modelization and computer sciences.

Within and outside its geographical borders, Europe is involved in a number of new problems including those concerning public health. Epidemiologists on this continent will have to take into account more and more often economical, psychological, social and even political dimensions at national, regional and global levels. It has often been a concern for European scientists to find a medium for publication without the risk of rejection by international referees on the basis of `local interest'.

Although peer review for publication in European Journal of Epidemiology is rigorous and very strict, the European interest of the data presented is also taken into consideration. Articles are carefully refereed and selected to provide the reader with the most up-to-date, original, well designed, well interpreted and significant information in the field of epidemiology.

Original and review articles, brief reports and letters to the editor are considered for publication. Proceedings of relevant symposia and monothematic issues on topics of particular interest are occasionally published as supplements.

European Journal of Epidemiology should be available in each library for researchers and students in epidemiology, hygiene and public health.
