Special Issue: Bullying, Peer Victimization, and Child and Adolescent Health

Call for Papers

Bullying is recognized as a serious public health concern, affecting children and adolescents from across the globe. Bullying “is a multifaceted form of mistreatment, mostly seen in schools and the workplace. It is characterized by the repeated exposure of one person to physical and/or emotional aggression including teasing, name calling, mockery, threats, harassment, taunting, hazing, social exclusion or rumours” (World Health Organization, 2010). Health is defined as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (World Health Organization, 1946). A growing body of research worldwide has documented the range of significant morbidities affecting individuals involved in bullying whether as bystanders, bullies and/or victims. Numerous studies have found that children and adolescents who are identified as bullies, victims or bully/victims are at a heightened risk of health problems, including depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, poor eating habits, and suicidal behavior. The health consequences of bullying can also extend to adulthood, as demonstrated in several longitudinal studies. Similarly, children with health problems, such as asthma, hearing/visual impairments, obesity, eating disorders, etc. are at an elevated risk of bullying and peer victimization in school.
The purpose of the Special Issue, “Bullying, Peer Victimization, and Child and Adolescent Health” is to solicit high quality research papers from scholars around the world to provide international perspectives on the relationship between experiences in bullying and health. Empirical studies, systematic review (following the Campbell Cochrane Guideline), and meta-analysis are welcome. Narrative reviews, commentaries, letter to the editor, and book reviews will not be considered for the Special Issue. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to): (a) Bi-directional association between depressive symptoms, anxiety, and bullying; (b) Link between peer victimization and eating disorder; (c) Food allergy and bullying/peer victimization; (d) Bullying/peer victimization of adolescents with disabilities; (e) Pathways from bullying and peer victimization to suicidal thoughts/behaviors; (f) Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and bullying/peer victimization. Both basic and applied research would be appropriate for the Special Issue.
We especially welcome studies that focus on marginalized/vulnerable youth (e.g., ethnic minorities, LGBTQ youth, youth living in low socio-economic status, etc.), and youth in a non-U.S. country/region. The focus of this Special Issue is on kindergarten to high school-age children. Please provide cultural context of your study. For instance, if your data are derived from Canada, what is the prevalence rate of bullying in Canada, how is bullying defined/conceptualized in Canada, and what are the literature on bullying in Canada? Research and Practice/policy implications for both bullying and health need to be included in reviews and meta-analyses.

Authors who wish to receive feedback on the first drafts should send their manuscript by email attachment to the Guest Editors prior to formal submission at the journal’s webpage.
The deadline for submission of manuscripts is June 30, 2017. However, late submissions may be included in the Special Issue, if space permits, or in a later issue of the journal.

    Journal of Child and Family Studies is the international forum for topical issues pertaining to the mental well-being of children, adolescents, and their families. The journal translates the latest research developments into practical applications for clinicians and healthcare practitioners by addressing all facets of emotional disorders, including issues associated with identification, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention. Original papers detail basic and applied research, program evaluation, service delivery, and policy issues on emotional or behavioral disorders, child abuse and neglect, respite care, foster care, mental health care financing, homelessness, family stress, AIDS, and substance abuse, among other timely topics.
