Call for Review Essays

JCPS is now accepting submissions of review essays. These essays are intended to be shorter than articles (between 4,000 to 7,000 words), and aim to review the existing literature and address a small number of books or articles in order to consider how these illuminate a larger and important conceptual, theoretical or methodological concern or a new development or research agenda in the discipline or subfields. Therefore, the review essay should bring a range of texts into dialogue with one another, identifying both thematic commonalities and methodological differences, and illuminating the purpose described above. Review essays should be developed in consultation with the editors, so authors should contact the Associate Editor, Jessica Teets, via email at jteets@middlebury.edu, to discuss ideas for an essay.
Review essays are not simply short articles or research notes, but should address an important research problem or question, showing a novel perspective on existing research, encouraging scholarly debate in the discipline, and shape or reshape a research agenda or intellectual development in the discipline or subfields. Please see an example of the review essays linked to below.
The review essays may be single-authored, or bring together a few commentators to discuss a common theme in the existing literature, especially a number of recently published books and/or papers on a common theme. Each contribution would be short (about 2,000 words), to meet the 7,000 word limit for the complete essay collection.
Journal of Chinese Political Science (JCPS) recently has been accepted into ESCI, Thomson Reuter's Emerging Sources Citation Index, a new index in the Web of Science Core Collection.
