Prepared by the American Joint Committee on Cancer, AJCC cancer staging is used by physicians and health care professionals throughout the world to facilitate the uniform description of neoplastic diseases. Proper classification and staging allow the physician to determine treatment more appropriately, evaluate results of management more reliably, and compare worldwide statistics reported from various institutions on a local, regional, and national basis more confidently.
The fully revised and updated Seventh Edition bring together all currently available information on staging of cancer at various anatomic sites and incorporates newly acquired knowledge on the etiology and pathology of cancer. As more is learned, cancer staging must adapt to accommodate new information and this revised edition provides an evidence-based staging system based upon the established tenets of TNM classification.
All of the TNM Staging information included in the Seventh Edition, taking effect for all new cases diagnosed after January 1, 2010, is uniform between the AJCC and the UICC (International Union Against Cancer).
