The VOXEL-MAN 3D-Navigator: Upper Limb is the latest addition to a series of interactive atlases of anatomy and radiology. It follows VOXEL-MAN 3D-Navigators 'Brain and Skull' and 'Inner Organs'. The program is based on a high resolution realistic digital body model that was derived from the cross-sectional images of the Visible Human Project. It contains approximately 320 three-dimensional anatomical objects of the arm and the hand including bones, muscles, arteries, and nerves, as well as tendons and ligaments. The material is organized into 11 scenes that can be interactively explored and additionally viewed in stereoscopic vision (red/green glasses included).
Unlike books or traditional multimedia programs, it allows interactive exploration of a detailed three-dimensional anatomical model. Each structure is labelled and described- and can thus be interrogated directly on the screen. In this way, the advantages of dealing with real anatomy are combined with the advantages of learning from a book.
Unlike traditional sources of knowledge, the VOXEL-MAN 3D-Navigator presents the radiological manifestation of normal anatomy in the context of three-dimensional anatomy. It thus decisively improves the understanding of both X-ray images and cross-sectional radiological images.
The anatomical nomenclature is available in Latin, English and German, while the manual is available in English and German.
The program provides unique reference material not only for medical students, but also for professionals in all medical disciplines involving anatomy and radiology. However, interested non-specialists can also explore the inner structure of the human body using the 3D-Navigator.
