At the May 15 meeting of the Pittsburgh Golden Chapter of the ASM International, David Laughlin, Principal Editor of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions, was presented with the Edgar C. Bain Award.
This award is given to "an outstanding member (of ASM International) for valuable contributions to the metallurgical and materials community."
Robert Dax (a CMU alumni) who presented the award, noted that it was first given in 1973 to Professor Robert F. Mehl who headed the then Metallurgical Engineering Department from 1935-1960. On being presented with the award, Laughlin pointed out that Bain not only is known for "Bainite" and the "Bain Strain" but was also the first American scientist to report on the existence of superlattice reflections in "x-ray spectrograms" of atomic ordering alloys.
Laughlin is the ALCOA Chair of Physical Metallurgy at CMU in the Materials Science and Engineering Department and has a courtesy appointment in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.
