Call for Papers

Topical Issue “Wetting and Drying: Physics and Pattern Formation”  

EPJ E is preparing a new special collection of papers dedicated to theoretical and experimental advances on wetting and drying. It will focus on the underlying physics of wetting dynamics and novel wetting and drying phenomena, including pattern formation. It will highlight questions as to how the wetting/drying behavior is related to the fluids’ rheological properties and how the behavior responses to external field stimuli.
The scope of this themed issue will include, but is not limited to:
  • wetting/ drying behavior on novel textured surface
  • wetting/ drying behavior of complex fluids, exhibiting for instance non-Newtonian behaviors (colloidal dispersions, polymer suspensions, etc…)
  • drying dynamics and pattern formation, and the effect of the physicochemical properties on these processes including colloid-salt mixture, polymer solution, protein and other living materials
  • mechanical properties resulting from wetting/drying phenomena: wrinkles and/or crack formation: crack dynamics, crack pattern formation, stress field, method to suppress crack, etc.
Submission for this special issue is open, and we invite you to submit papers for consideration to the Editorial Office, either online or by email to epje@edpsciences.org. Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the Topical Issue “Wetting and Drying: Physics and Pattern Formation”, and marked for the attention of Duyang Zang, Ludovic Pauchard and Wei Shen (Guest Editors).

Special Issue "Multi-scale phenomena in complex flows and flowing matter" 

This Special Issue is open to contributions on topics related to flowing matter, focusing on the coupling between small-scale interactions and large-scale behaviour. The problems we like to address are characterized by diverse nano and microscales (down to the atomistic level), mesoscopic collective behaviour and hydrodynamical spatio-temporal evolutions with complex rheology and strong non-equilibrium properties. From nano to macro scales, the interplay of the dynamics at the different scales still remains challenging. Its understanding requires finding solutions to several difficult open problems: new ideas cross-connecting statistical modeling, experimental and numerical investigations are needed.

    EPJ E publishes papers describing advances in the understanding of physical aspects of Soft, Liquid and Living Systems.

    Soft matter is a generic term for a large group of condensed, often heterogeneous systems -- often also called complex fluids -- that display a large response to weak external perturbations and that possess properties governed by slow internal dynamics.

    Flowing matter refers to all systems that can actually flow, from simple to multiphase liquids, from foams to granular matter.

    Living matter concerns the new physics that emerges from novel insights into the properties and behaviours of living systems. Furthermore, it aims at developing new concepts and quantitative approaches for the study of biological phenomena. Approaches from soft matter physics and statistical physics play a key role in this research.

    The journal includes reports of experimental, computational and theoretical studies and appeals to the broad interdisciplinary communities including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and materials science.

    Colloquia describe the development of new areas of research or the impact of new and promising experimental or theoretical methods in the fields that are within the spectrum of topics covered by the respective journals. While not as extensive and complete as reviews in the usual sense, they are intended to suitably introduce new research directions and techniques in their early stages of development, and to a wider audience. There is no explicit constraint regarding the length of such manuscripts, although 20 printed pages would be the most usual length. All invited/submitted manuscripts will undergo the same refereeing procedure as all other contributions submitted to the journal. For invited colloquium papers, authors will receive a honorarium of EUR 400,-- upon publication and colour figures will be free of charge. Colloquium papers are generally solicited by the journal editors. Authors wishing to submit a colloquium paper are advised to contact J.M. Di Meglio.
