About this book

The C4 pathway of photosynthesis was discovered and characterized, more than four decades ago. Interest in C4 pathway has been sustained and has recently been boosted with the discovery of single-cell C4 photosynthesis and the successful introduction of key C4-cycle enzymes in important crops, such as rice. Further, cold-tolerant C4 plants are at the verge of intense exploitation as energy crops. Rapid and multidisciplinary progress in our understanding of C4 plants warrants a comprehensive documentation of the available literature. The book, which is a state-of-the-art overview of several basic and applied aspects of C4 plants, will not only provide a ready source of information but also triggers further research on C4 photosynthesis. Written by internationally acclaimed experts, it provides an authoritative source of progress made in our knowledge of C4 plants, with emphasis on physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biogeography, evolution, besides bioengineering C4 rice and biofuels. The book is an advanced level textbook for postgraduate students and a reference book for researchers in the areas of plant biology, cell biology, biotechnology, agronomy, horticulture, ecology and evolution.

Reviews

From the reviews:

“The book is edited by … two outstanding scientists in this area. It can be regarded as an update and successor of the influential book ‘C4 Plant Biology’ … that probably was bedtime reading for an entire generation of C4 researchers. This book has the potential to be equally successful. … chapters make the C4 world more easily accessible for beginners as they describe the work in a historical context. Moreover, they are inspiring for students … to start their own scientific career.” (Christoph Peterhänsel, Journal of Plant Physiology, Vol. 169, 2012)

C4 Photosynthesis and Related CO2 Concentrating Mechanisms”, is published at the most appropriate time when we urgently need to improve our understanding of C4 photosynthesis so that we can better exploit this photosynthetic machinery to benefit our society. […] provides comprehensive and authoritative reviews on all the important aspects of C4 photosynthesis, spanning from physiological and developmental processes, molecular basis, diversity and evolution, to engineering and bio-energy. In addition, the Preface and some of the chapters include interesting history related to C4 photosynthesis. […] excellent resource for beginning researchers, advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and even research specialists on C4 photosynthesis and the related CO2 concentrating mechanisms. I recommend it strongly to all the major libraries and all the plant research laboratories of the World” —(Xinguang Zhu, CAS-MPG, Chinese Academy of Sciences and German Max Planck Society) Partner Institute for Computational Biology, Shanghai, China)
