Periodontal and Implant Research - Call for Papers: Biologics in periodontal and peri-implant therapy

Biologics have experienced an upswing in recent years, that it is no longer possible to imagine everyday treatment without them. Biologics include any type of wound healing enhancer that has an impact on the healing, morbidity and/or quality of hard and soft tissue augmentations. Risk Patients benefit from improved and safer healing. Aesthetic surgery can reduce morbidity and improve outcomes. During augmentations and tooth extractions, the blood clot is stabilized and heals more predictably. In particular, the focus is on blood concentrates, enamel matrix proteins (SMP) and hyaluronic acid. Despite some very good data, some mechanisms and modes of action have not yet been clarified, meaning that the full potential cannot be exploited. Further preclinical and clinical studies are required to further highlight the positive aspects and to clarify the differences between the biologics used. The influence on replacement materials or cells remains exciting. A more profound insight will be helpful to fully understand the potential of Biologics. The focus will be on original research articles, reviews as well on case reports and studies on the following topics: influence of Biologics on bone (autologous as well as xenograft) and membranes, scar tissue formation, soft tissue healing.

Dr. Frederic Kauffmann

Dr. Kauffmann received his dental degree from Würzburg University, Germany. 2018 to 2020 he was ITI Scholar at the Department of Peridontology (Chair: Dr. William Giannobile) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, United States. Dr. Kauffmann is an ITI Fellow and since 2018 he is a member of the young ITI leadership team Germany. His research is focused on the behavior of collagen membranes on bone quantity and quality and the use of different wound healing enhancers to improve hard- and soft tissues. He is working in a private practice and is external clinical lecturer at the Department for Periodontology, University Witten/Herdecke, Germany.
