International Journal of Coal Science & Technology - Special issue on Innovative Approaches in Coal-Based Energy Systems for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development

Introduction:

Innovative approaches within coal-based energy systems have emerged as pivotal solutions in addressing climate change and fostering sustainable development worldwide. In many countries, coal remains a cornerstone of energy production, yet its conventional utilization poses many environmental challenges due to carbon emissions and the release of other pollutants. However, advancements in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), alongside cleaner combustion technologies, offer promising avenues for mitigating coal's negative environmental impacts.

Despite advances in cleaner coal technologies, existing challenges persist and hinder widespread adoption. These include cost-effectiveness, technological scalability, and the need for robust regulatory frameworks. Yet, the urgency to curb emissions and coal's significant role in many economies underscore the imperative for further research and innovation in this domain. Continued exploration of novel methods for carbon emissions reduction, integration with renewable energy sources, and advancements in policy frameworks are pivotal. By addressing these challenges, innovative coal-based energy solutions can catalyze global efforts toward climate change mitigation, ensuring energy security while fostering sustainable development on a substantial scale.

This special issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for scholarly contributions that explore, analyze, and propose advancements in coal-based energy technologies within the context of climate change mitigation and sustainable development. The scope of this special issue encompasses, but is not limited to:

  • Advanced carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies that highlight novel techniques for capturing carbon emissions from coal-based facilities and utilizing captured carbon in beneficial applications.
  • Integration and hybridization of coal and renewable energy systems contribute to the development of sustainable and resilient energy sources.
  • Technologies on cleaner and more efficient coal utilization methods, including coal flotation, clean coal combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, and advanced emission control.
  • Circular economy in coal industries that explore innovative approaches to waste reduction, reuse, and recycling within coal mining, processing, and utilization to promote a circular economy.
  • Policy interventions, economic models, and regulatory frameworks that incentivize the adoption of environmentally sustainable coal technologies while ensuring economic viability and energy security.
  • Case studies from diverse geographical regions highlight successful implementation, challenges faced, and the socio-economic impact of transitioning toward cleaner coal-based energy systems.
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies of coal-based energy systems from technical, economic, and environmental sustainability perspectives.
  • Coal-based biorefineries to produce sustainable energy and value-added products.
