Railway Engineering Science - Special Issue Call for Papers: Innovative Techniques for Railway Infrastructure Monitoring

Over the past few years, significant investments have been allocated to the construction of new railway lines, along with the rehabilitation and upgrading of existing ones. Several of these railway lines encompass a substantial number of critical infrastructures that operational and safety conditions should be considered throughout their life cycle. Advancements in science and technology have recently facilitated enhanced structural condition monitoring of railway infrastructures. This improvement primarily stems from the implementation of intelligent strategies for inspection, monitoring, maintenance, and risk management. Within this framework, the goal of this Special Issue is to consolidate the most recent research studies, findings, and achievements related to the condition monitoring of railway infrastructures. Theoretical, experimental, and computational investigations are welcome.

Special Issue Scope

Paper submissions are expected to address a range of topics related (but not limited) to:

  • Automatic damage detection/identification
  • Wayside and onboard monitoring systems
  • Weigh-in-motion and bridge weigh-in-motion systems
  • New sensors and technologies (photogrammetry, laser scanning, drones, wireless, etc.)
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)-based methodologies such as deep learning, unsupervised learning, transfer learning, etc.
  • Remote inspection
  • Non-destructive evaluation and non-destructive testing (NDE & NDT)
  • Model-driven and data-driven digital twins of railway systems
  • Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring of railway systems
  • Big data analytics approaches
  • Predictive maintenance of railway system and its infrastructures
  • Retrofitting of Bridges and Railways
