Quantitative Approaches in Management

Publishing model:

OR Spectrum - Call for Papers - Special Issue: Pricing and Revenue Management for Complex Systems

Overview of the scope

Revenue management and pricing was first introduced in the airline industry given perishable products, limited capacity, and heterogenous customer segments. Related models and methods have been successfully adapted in industries including car rentals, bus and train services, hotels, cruise ships, event management, retail, and manufacturing. Even though the application of these methods can go beyond the scope of the above-mentioned industries, the research is rather scattered regarding what role they can play in the service design of complex systems to engage all stakeholders in operational decisions.  Revenue management and pricing methods are critical to bridging and capturing the interplay between supply and demand. For example, many service systems typically encounter a mismatch between the associated design and planning decisions (supply) and the usage and consumption patterns (demand).

A tailored system appeals to operators, who gain a better knowledge of their operational costs, and customers, who benefit from increased service and satisfaction. Hence, it is important to explicitly allow for interactions between different stakeholders (public authorities and private companies) in the model governing the system's decisions.

This special issue aims to bring together novel research on the application of revenue management and pricing methods in planning complex systems (e.g., passenger mobility, city logistics, and energy sector) and encourages submissions of original research and review articles on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • New methodologies to promote desirable behavior of different stakeholders to design a sustainable and adaptive complex system.
  • Applications of methods and models incorporating real-time user data in operational and tactical decisions.
  • Steady-state analysis of dynamic complex systems.
