In this Virtual Issue of Agronomy for Sustainable Development (ASD), we want to explore the latest scientific advances providing insights and solutions to pave the way for an agriculture with much less chemical pesticides and ultimately with none at all. We will include articles on four main scientific domains:
Bio-inspired management of Crop HealthGenetics and breeding of new cultivars for new servicesCropping system and agrotechnologyAgri-food system transformation, societal adoption, and public policies.

This Virtual Issue will bring together state-of-the-art scientific evidence for the resilience of farming systems. We will include articles on:
- The conceptual framework of the resilience of agricultural systems, appropriate indicators and evaluation methods
- Empirical evidence from longterm agroforestry and mixed farming experiments on their resilience against climate change as compared to monocropping and pure livestock systems
- Modelling the resilience of agricultural systems against climate change: Model development, scenarios, biophysical and bio-economic evaluations.

On-Farm Experimentation (OFE) is a farmer-centric pathway for improvement in agri-food systems. Based on experiments designed with farmers, conducted by them, and for their interests first, OFE not only answers farmers’ own questions but also provides data for researchers to create more broadly valuable insights.
This Virtual Issue focuses on issues and recent advances relative to OFE with emphasis on enabling digital technologies.

We are very pleased to inform you that the second Virtual Issue Insights on Work in Agriculture of Agronomy for Sustainable Development is available as a special service for you.
Our Virtual Issues are compiled in close collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and focus on cutting-edge topics. They present key articles which have been published in the journal over the course of the last years.
The journal’s editorial direction has decided to improve its services by publishing the articles in a continuous way (continuous article publishing). This will allow articles to be directly published in issues (in construction) as soon as they are accepted and ready to be published. The articles will then be citable in their final format immediately, without having to spend time online first.

This study is a comprehensive global meta-analysis assessing the contribution of fertilization (with a wide set of nutrients) to the nutritional quality of food crops, an aspect little studied so far, compared to yield. It shows that fertilizer application improves crop yield and nutritional quality by varying degrees, depending on nutrient and crop species, with vegetables being the most responsive. It paves the way towards a quantitative understanding of nutrient management programs and responsible plant nutrition solutions that foster the sustainable production of nutritious and healthy crops for human consumption
This paper is a response to Duru et al. (Agron Sustain Dev 35:1259-1281, 2015) who stressed that a tool was missing for studying and improving the performance of cropping systems in the transition to highly diversified agriculture. The authors propose a new concept named ESSU (Ecosystem Services functional Spatial Unit) which allows the representation of an entire diversified agroecosystem by the repetition of the spatial unit that provides the same sets of targeted ecosystem services as the agroecosystem it represents. It opens new theoretical and practical research avenues for designing, evaluating or modeling diversified agroecosystems.
