Proceedings of the Zoological Society - Call for Papers in Special Issue (October - December, 2021) : The Biological Impacts of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)

Special Issue Title: The biological impacts of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) (October - December, 2021)

About the Research Topic

In environmental and human toxicology endocrine disruption is at present a major issue.  The term endocrine disruptor was coined in 1991 at the Wingspread Conference Centre in Wisconsin. Since then several conferences up to 1999 have generated consensus statements from scientists regarding the hazard from endocrine disruptors, particularly in wildlife and also in humans.

Endocrine disrupting compounds encompass a variety of chemical classes, including drugs, pesticides, compounds used in the plastics industry (this opens in a new tab) and in consumer products, industrial by-products and pollutants, and even some naturally produced plant chemicals. Some are pervasive and widely dispersed in the environment and may bio-accumulate. Some are persistent organic pollutants (this opens in a new tab) (POP's), and can be transported long distances across national boundaries and have been found in virtually all regions of the world. Others are rapidly degraded in the environment or human body or may be present for only short periods of time. Health effects attributed to endocrine disrupting compounds include a range of reproductive problems, early puberty, changes in hormone levels, thyroid metabolism and obesity, cardiovascular endocrinology, brain and behaviour problems; impaired immune functions; and various cancers.

In 2013 the WHO (this opens in a new tab) and the United Nations Environment Programme (this opens in a new tab) released a study, the most comprehensive report on EDCs to date, calling for more research to fully understand the associations between EDCs and the risks to health of human and animal life. The team pointed to wide gaps in knowledge and called for more research to obtain a fuller picture of the health and environmental impacts of endocrine disruptors. To improve global knowledge the team has recommended for more testing, more research, reporting, and collaboration.

In this Special Issue for Proceedings of Zoological Society, on The Biological Impacts of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), we will focus on the sources, exposure, biotransformation and mechanism of action, biomonitering of exposure assessment of EDCs, We also focus on biological impacts of EDCs on ecosystem, animal experimentation, human studies meta-analysis of available data on development reproduction, growth, metabolism and obesity. We welcome from authors reviews, mini reviews, general commentaries, hypothesis, and perspectives articles. This Research Topic aims to propose an overview of the level of knowledge concerning the biological impacts of EDCs
