Anatomical Science International - Call for Papers: Convergence and Divergence of Anatomical Terminology

Submission deadline: December 31st, 2023

  “Names and natures do often agree.” Where did anatomy come from? After Vesalius’ “Fabrica,” Gaspard Bauhin introduced an anatomical nomenclature. Without his idea of terminology, we might feel reluctant to describe a specific body structure by assigning names to its individual parts. The first contemporary, systematic nomenclature dates back to 1895 in Germany, where the Anatomische Gesellschaft (Anatomical Society) stipulated the Latin-based “Nomina Anatomica.” A century later, it was integrated into “Terminologia Anatomica (TA),” which employs both Latin and English, the lingua franca of the modern academic world. The second edition of TA was launched in 2019 and was rather provocative. Since terminology embodies the signifié of the respective object, a one-size-fits-all approach cannot be applied here. Due to each country’s unique cultural background and anatomical expertise, terminology has become increasingly diverse. In response to these trends in anatomy, we plan to publish “Convergence and Divergence of Anatomical Terminology” as a special volume of ASI. This issue will cover broad areas of anatomical terminology including its history, specific types of expertise, and countries’ different cultural backgrounds. We encourage you to submit your unique and original ideas on the following topics:

<topics>
●History of terminology
●Terminologia Anatomica. (TA): Present and future
●Terminological topics in non-English-speaking countries
●TA and different types of expertise: Pros and cons
