=====================================================================
Over the last four decades, quantum computation and communication received very serious attention in literature. While secure quantum communication is significantly ahead in actual commercial market, the situation is still elusive for quantum computers that can actually be used for cryptanalysis. However, we are all aware of possible devastating impact of Shor's algorithm on classical public key cryptosystems that are based on factorization and discrete log. That is why, there is a worldwide research effort to design public key cryptosystems that are resistant against any quantum adversary and a standardization process by NIST is in the final stage. This is broadly known as Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

At the same time, there are serious impacts on symmetric ciphers too. Simon and Grover's algorithm can have immediate implications against security of symmetric ciphers. For example, the effective security is reduced by half in terms of secret key size using Grover's technique. In this regard, the cryptology community has witnessed a considerable volume of high-quality research work, both in theory and practice since 2015. A good proportion of these works exploited fundamental principles and constructs of Discrete Mathematics related to classical as well as quantum techniques in identifying novel cryptanalytic ideas against symmetric ciphers. There are certain outstanding results in the domain of Boolean functions and Sequences too from quantum viewpoint. In this context, a special issue on "Quantum Cryptanalysis of Symmetric Ciphers" could be of significant interest to the cryptology community across the world, and harnessing a pool of related research contributions into a single literary volume would have a substantial archival value.

The issue is not only limited to exact quantum cryptanalysis, but results related to cipher design that are resistant to quantum attacks are also welcome. Further, quantum algorithms and techniques that are related to Boolean functions and varied combinatorial and algebraic treatments will also be considered.

For this special volume, we solicit the following:
1. original research contributions in relevant topics;
2. research contributions published and/or presented at past conferences/workshops;
   (with substantial revision and at least 30% new contribution)
3. expository survey and/or tutorial articles on relevant topics.

We plan to invite some of the papers from eminent researchers in this domain, and consider additional contributory papers in related areas. There will be a detailed two round review process for the invited as well as the contributed papers, maintaining a standard similar to that of the Journal.

Detailed instructions for the authors:
--------------------------------------

Authors are encouraged to submit high-quality, original work that has
neither appeared in, nor is under consideration by, other journals.

Submissions are non-anonymous. Each submission must begin with a title, an
abstract, a list of key words, and an introduction that summarizes the
contributions of the paper. Accepted submissions must not appear in any
journal or in any other conference or workshop with proceedings. The final
versions of accepted papers will have to follow the CCDS guidelines
(http://www.springer.com/computer/security+and+cryptology/journal/12095)
with an expected page limit of 20-40 pages including references and appendices.

Springer offers authors, editors and reviewers of Cryptography and
Communications a web-enabled online manuscript submission and review
system. Our online system offers authors the ability to track the review
process of their manuscript.

Manuscripts should be submitted to:

                        http://www.edmgr.com/ccds .

This online system offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission
procedures, and supports a wide range of submission file formats.

Once you log in, for "Article Type" you need to choose
"Quantum Cryptanalysis of Symmetric Ciphers".

Submissions under item 1 must not duplicate work that any of the authors has
published elsewhere or has submitted in parallel to any journal or any other
conference or workshop with formally published proceedings.

Submissions under item 2 must contain detailed revision of research
contributions published and/or presented at past conferences with substantial
amount of new contribution (roughly speaking it should be one third of the
total contribution). The authors should clearly identify the sections that are
novel.

Submissions under item 3 should summarize and explain state-of-the-art research
results in a novel way that are expected to provide better understanding in the
field of quantum cryptanalysis and related areas. Such papers should describe
the existing literature, provide a detailed perspective in his domain, and try
to explain future trends in this area of research.

Cryptography and Communications adheres to the standard Peer Review Policy, Process and Guidance (this opens in a new tab) as outlined by Springer under Editorial Policies (this opens in a new tab) in the Information for Journal Authors (this opens in a new tab) web page.

  • All special issue papers must be prepared in accordance with the Journal guidelines: https://www.springer.com/journal/12095/submission-guidelines.Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the special issue.
  • All manuscripts will be subject to the Journal’s rigorous peer review policy, by at least two independent reviewers. This evaluation will cover the following aspects, but will not be limited to: relevance, significance of contribution to the field, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation.
  • Conference-based special issue papers are reviewed by the Program Chairs and Program Committee members of the respective conference, with help from external reviewers selected by them. Conference-based special issue papers are expected to have 30-40% new material to be publishable in the journal.
  • It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the peer review process.

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue.  All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least two independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process.

Before submitting, it is also recommended that you visit the following webpages to familiarize yourself with various aspects of the editor role: Springer Nature Code of Conduct (this opens in a new tab) and  Springer Nature publishing and editorial policies (this opens in a new tab).
