Stem Cell Reviews and Reports - Call for Papers: Special Issue Commemorating Professor Hal Broxmeyer

December 2024 marks the third anniversary of the passing of Dr. Hal Broxmeyer, one of the world’s leading scientists and authorities in stem cell research. Many of us also lost a mentor and a dear colleague. (this opens in a new tab)

In honor of this great scientist, Stem Cell Reviews and Reports announces a call for papers related to basic and clinical stem cell research to honor this exceptional scientist and pillar of stem cell investigations. Papers can be reviews or original research. Submissions are being accepted with a goal towards publishing this special issue in January 2025.

In 1988, Dr. Hal Broxmeyer and Dr. Eliane Gluckman performed the first umbilical cord blood transplantation. As of today, more than 40,000 cord blood transplantations have been performed worldwide. Besides his contribution to hematopoietic transplants, Dr Brookmeyer’s’ significant accomplishments included: a better understanding of the role of cytokines, growth factors, and chemokines in hematopoiesis; effects of oxidative phosphorylation in the specification of hematopoietic stem cells; mechanisms regulating mobilization and homing of stem cells; and interaction between neural system and bone marrow.

Throughout his career, Dr. Broxmeyer received many awards, including the Karl Landsteiner Award of the American Society of Blood Banks (2002), the E. Donnall Thomas Prize of the American Society of Hematology (2007), the Donald Metcalf Award of the International Society of Hematology and Stem Cell Research (2011), and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cord Blood Association (2019). His contribution of over 850 peer-reviewed published scientific papers, collectively cited more than 75,000 times, reflects the depth of his research and legacy.
