Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering - Call for Papers–Additive manufacturing-based fabrication of biosensors for biomedical applications

Dear colleagues,

Complex and critical elements of micro and nanosensors can be precisely manufactured using advanced additive manufacturing processes. Several kinds of sensors can be used for detecting target analytes as indicators of diseases. Biosensors can be useful for the detection of ultra-low quantities of analyte in a faster, cost-effective, and highly sensitive way. Biosensors can be broadly classified as a physical or chemical type of sensors. In the case of physical sensors, quantities such as geometric, mechanical, thermal, and hydraulic variables are measured. In biomedical applications, these variables can provide indications regarding muscle displacement, blood pressure, core body temperature, blood flow, cerebrospinal fluid pressure, bone growth velocity, etc. Whereas chemical sensors are concerned with chemical quantities such as identifying the presence of chemical composite, detecting the concentration of various chemical species, and monitoring the chemical activities in the body for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The fabrication of additively manufactured micro and nanosensors in large volume, and cost-effective manner using different nanomaterials in case of biomedical applications is gaining considerable attention. A variety of additive manufacturing techniques are involved in the production of these sensors such as stereolithography, selective laser sintering, polyjet processes, fused deposition modeling, inkjet printing, digital light processing, etc. Each of these processes has its own merits and demerits related to cost and time of fabrication, the type of materials that can be processed, and prototypes that can be formed.

This special issue aims to provide details on the manufacturing of micro and nanosensors using additive manufacturing technology and the challenges and future aspects of biosensing in the field of biomedical engineering. Original research and review articles are mostly welcomed in the hub of this special issue.
