Guest Editors
Zhen-Yu Yin, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Hong Kong
Qiushi Chen, Clemson University, Clemson, SC, USA
Erdin Ibraim, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK

Overview
The proposed special issue aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the properties and modelling techniques associated with sustainable geomaterials. This special issue will feature a selection of high-quality research papers to be presented at the International Symposium on Innovations in Geotechnical Engineering towards Sustainability (IGES2023) to be held in Hong Kong, and invited papers from outstanding scholars in this field, but not limited in IGES2023.

This unique compilation of studies intends to promote the theoretical understanding and practical applications of sustainable materials in geotechnical engineering. The understanding of the properties of sustainable geomaterials and their integration into numerical models and design methodologies hold the potential to revolutionize the field by offering environmentally conscious alternatives that enhance the performance, durability, and long-term sustainability of geotechnical structures.

Objective
The central objective of this special issue is to promote knowledge exchange and facilitate the dissemination of cutting-edge research related to sustainable geomaterials. The issue will serve as a platform for researchers, engineers, and practitioners to share their findings and advancements in the field. By emphasizing the properties and modelling approaches of sustainable geomaterials, this special issue aims to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly and durable geotechnical solutions and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in this important area of geotechnical engineering.

Scope

This special issue will cover a wide range of topics related to the properties and modelling of sustainable geomaterials. Key areas of interest include (but not limited to):

Durability, chemical resistance, long-term mechanical/hydraulic characteristics, and other properties of sustainable geomaterialsInnovative application of recycled/waste materials and industrial by-products in geotechnical engineeringInnovative testing methods for understanding the composition and structure of sustainable materials and assessing their properties under various environmental conditionsRecent development of numerical modelling approaches to simulate the behaviour of sustainable geomaterialsIntegration of sustainable geomaterial properties into numerical models for predicting the performance and long-term sustainability of geotechnical structuresReal-world case studies highlighting the successful implementation of sustainable geomaterials in geotechnical engineering projects

Propose Timeline:
Call for Papers issued: Since 1 Jan 2024
Final Submission Deadline: 31 October 2024
Publication of the Special Collection: 31 July 2025

Submissions will undergo the standard peer review process adequate for original papers, which should have size, quality, and originality appropriate to an archival scientific Journal. The Guest Editors of the Special Issue will receive the papers and conduct the review process. Once the review process is completed, the final decision on publication will be made by the Editor in Chief, who will ensure that all manuscripts published in Acta Geotechnica meet the Aims and Scope of the Journal and are of sufficient quality.
