Topical Collection on Olympic Winter Sports
Olympic winter sports encompass a diverse range of athletic disciplines, from team sports like ice hockey and curling to individual events like skiing and snowboarding. Despite these differences, they share some common traits that present unique challenges to athletes. From a biomechanical and physiological perspective, these challenges include sliding on snowy and icy surfaces using equipment like skis, skates, and sleds and exposure to environmental factors like extreme cold and hypoxia at high altitudes.

An evidence-based understanding of the unique demands and characteristics of each discipline is crucial for optimizing athlete health, training, and performance. Coaches and athletes alike can benefit from the latest scientific discoveries in this field. The journal Sport Sciences for Health aims to advance this understanding by inviting submissions of scientific contributions on Olympic winter sports, especially in relation to the upcoming XXV Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina 2026 (Italy). We welcome recent scientific findings that can inform best practices in testing, training, performance optimization, and other associated issues that impact athletes competing in the disciplines included in Olympic Winter Games.

Topics:
Researchers are encouraged to submit original research articles, brief research reports, perspectives, case studies, or reviews that align with the Aims and Scope of the journal. Submissions should focus on one of the disciplines included in the Winter Olympic Games and address one or more of the following areas to be considered for publication:

- Physiology and biomechanics determinants of performance
- Training and testing
- Physiology and performance in various environmental conditions
- Sex differences in training and performance
