Software Quality Journal - CfP: Dependable Computing for Complex Systems

In the industry 4.0 era, complex systems such as cyber-physical systems (CPS), machine learning-based systems, and real-time systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in both industrial applications and daily life. These systems are composed of numerous interacting components, leading to complex behaviours. Ensuring the dependability of such systems is crucial, as failures or deviations from requirements could result in severe consequences, including potential loss of human lives.

While extensive research has been conducted to enhance the safety, reliability, maintainability, and availability of these systems through formal methods and engineering techniques, there still exists a gap between the vast number of interacting components and the scalability of current approaches. Therefore, this special issue aims to address this gap by collecting innovative and high-quality research achievements in dependability theories, techniques, and experimental studies related to complex systems.

The focus is on soliciting novel techniques or adaptations of existing techniques that tackle issues such as component interactions and real-time scheduling. By bringing together cutting-edge research in dependable computing for complex systems, the special issue will contribute to the development of more effective approaches to ensure the dependability and quality of critical systems in the industry.

The special issue aims to gather contributions that advance the field of dependable computing for complex systems. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Software and hardware reliability.
  • Software aging and rejuvenation.
  • Software testing, verification, and validation.
  • Techniques and approaches for safety-critical systems.
  • Dependability measurement, modeling, evaluation, and tools.
  • Dependability techniques and methodologies for complex systems.
  • Dependable system design.
  • Self-healing, self-protecting, and self-adaptive systems.
  • Fault-tolerant techniques.
  • Studies on non-deterministic bugs, aging-related bugs, etc.
  • Quality assurance in server systems, cyber-physical systems, learning-based systems, etc.
  • Internet of things (IoT) architectures, protocols, security, and privacy.
  • Modeling and simulation of complex systems.
  • Analysis of software faults/bugs, errors, and failures.
  • Fault localization for complex bugs.
  • Repairing and re-engineering for complex systems.
  • Analytical, empirical, and experimental studies of any of the above topics.

Guest Editors:

Zheng Zheng is a Professor at Beihang University and the deputy dean of School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering. His research work is primarily concerned with software reliability and testing. Recently, He paid more attention on the intelligent software reliability engineering. He is co-author of over 100 journal and conference publications, including IEEE TDSC, IEEE TIFS, IEEE TSE, IEEE TR, IEEE TSC, JSS and so on. He serves for IEEE PRDC2019, IEEE DASC 2019, IEEE ISSRE 2020, IEEE QRS 2021 as PC Co-Chairs, as well as WoSAR 2019, DeIS 2020 and DeIS 2021 as General Co-Chairs. He is Editor-in-chief of Atlantis Highlights in Engineering (Springer Nature), Associate Editor of IEEE TR (2021- ), Elsevier KBS (2018- ) and Springer IJCIS (2012- ) and Guest Editor of IEEE TDSC (2021). Junjun Zheng is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Systems Engineering within the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at Osaka University, Japan. His research interests include software reliability, performance evaluation, and dependable computing.  He holds memberships in several professional organizations, including the Operations Research Society of Japan, the Reliability Engineering Association of Japan, the Institute of Electrical, Information and Communication Engineers, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
