New Strategies in Plant Improvement

Publishing model:

Molecular Breeding - News: Molecular Breeding Welcome Plant Variety Articles Now!

We are pleased to announce that starting from 2024, Molecular Breeding (MOLB) welcome Plant Variety articles!

To publish this kind of article, please read the guidelines for authors below carefully before submission.

*************

Plant Variety articles. Plant Variety articles must be new reports of plant cultivars, valuable genetic germplasm or parental line of hybrids. The article reports plant material with novel and unique characteristics compared with available accession sources of a particular species. Plant material must be officially released by the originating organization (public or private). Cultivars that are officially released by public or private agencies are eligible for registration provided that the new variant has demonstrated uniqueness and utility. Registered cultivars must be statistically different from common check cultivars for the trait(s) that is (are) the basis of release. Cultivars not meeting this standard will not be accepted for publication because they do not contribute utility above already available germplasm sources. Valuable genetic germplasm must possess a unique trait, trait combination, and/or exotic genetic background that is not currently available in existing germplasm. Germplasm does not need to be commercially viable in its current form. Germplasm must have been officially released by the originating institution. Germplasm that will be commercialized must meet the more stringent standards of cultivar registrations. Some crops, such as grass, shrub, or forb species, designate “prebreeding” or “prevariety” populations; these will be registered as germplasm if they have identifiably useful traits or composition to warrant their registration. Scientific justification may include multi-environment field studies for agronomic traits, biochemical and/or genetic characterization, or others. “Source-identified” materials will not be accepted for registration in the absence of additional defining characteristics.

Other tips for preparing the article:

  • Main text – up to 1200 words, excluding abstract, Methods, references and figure legends
  • Abstract – up to 150 words, unreferenced
  • Display items – up to 2 items (figures and/or tables)
  • Results and Methods should be divided by topical subheadings; the Discussion does not contain subheadings
  • References – up to 10
