Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment - Meet the Associate Editors

A RainesAmanda Medley Raines, Ph.D. is a Clinician Investigator at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans and Core Investigator with the South Central Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center. Dr. Raines also holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Louisiana State University. Dr. Raines’ research focuses on identifying and examining transdiagnostic risk and maintenance factors, as well as the development and refinement of novel interventions for anxiety and related pathology including PTSD, substance use, and suicide. To date, Dr. Raines has published over 135 manuscripts, many of which have been featured in high impact journals including the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science (formerly Journal of Abnormal), Assessment, and Addictive Behaviors. Dr. Raines currently serves as the Chair for the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) Research and Professional Development Committee and the Louisiana Psychological Association Academic/Scientific Committee. In addition to her role as an Associate Editor at Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment, Dr. Raines also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for over 40 peer-reviewed journals.

M. MartelMichelle Martel, Ph.D. is a Full Professor and the new Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Martel has a federally funded research program on ADHD and disruptive behavior problems. Dr. Martel’s research utilizes a translational, “bench to bedside” perspective to examine developmental pathways to ADHD and associated disorders, exploring pathways using a broad, integrative framework that includes attention to early-emerging mechanisms and markers, including temperament/personality traits and cognition, as well as postulated etiological factors, including both environmental and biological influence and their interaction with attention to individual differences. Dr. Martel has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and 3 books on these topics. Dr. Martel edits at a variety of journals but most recently and substantially as Assessment and Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment. Dr. Martel is also a licensed child clinical psychologist who assesses and treats a wide variety of child clinical problems in private practice, hospital, and academic settings.

K. L. YoonK. Lira Yoon, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Yoon’s research program focuses on the interplay between cognition and emotion in the context of depression and anxiety disorders. Dr. Yoon’s research attempts to integrate biological and psychological lines of inquiry to gain a better understanding of the roles that biased processing of emotional information (e.g., attention, interpretation, working memory), stress reactivity (e.g., cortisol, heart rate variability), and emotion regulation play in the onset and maintenance of emotional disorders. Dr. Yoon’s articles appear in Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science (formerly known as Journal of Abnormal Psychology), Behaviour Research and Therapy, and Cognition and Emotion, among others. Dr. Yoon serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment and Cognition and Emotion and as a Consulting Editor for Clinical Psychological Science and Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science. Dr. Yoon is also a Co-Chair of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee of the Society for Research in Psychopathology (2022 – 2024).

D. ChesterDavid Chester, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Social Psychology program. Dr. Chester’s research interests focus on the psychological and neural mechanisms that cause and constrain aggression. Dr. Chester has published research on these topics, many of which have been featured in high impact journals including Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Perspectives on Psychological Science, and Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience. Dr. Chester serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment and as a Senior Consulting Editor for Psychology of Violence.

New Content ItemKaren Derefinko, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Department of Pharmacology, Addiction Science, and Toxicology, at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Derefinko conducts clinical trials of innovative prevention and treatment methods for substance use disorder, and explores correlates associated with the development of substance use. Dr. Derefinko has published research on these topics, many of which have been featured in high impact journals including Addiction, Addictive Behaviors, Pain, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics, and Trials. In addition to her role as an Associate Editor at Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment, Dr. Derefinko serves on the Editorial Board Reviewer at Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment. Dr. Derefinko also serves on the NIH HEAL Initiative Planning Committee and on the Substance Misuse and Addiction Resource for Tennessee (SMART) Policy Network.
