Significant challenges are faced today by healthcare systems. An aging population, leading to increased demand for services, and a shortage of staff have been creating a growing need for innovative healthcare systems engineering solutions. To address these challenges, researchers are encouraged to develop new, practical models and methods to support decision-making, where collaboration with healthcare stakeholders is essential to ensure that these solutions are applicable and effective in real-world settings.
The 5th International Conference on Health Care Systems Engineering, HCSE 2023, was held in Lisbon from September 14 to September 16. Organized as a collaboration between the engineering and medical schools of the University of Lisbon and hosted in the atmosphere of Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte, the largest hospital center in Portugal, the conference originated enriching discussions between researchers and health practitioners that helped to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation and where the above challenges were discussed.
In this setting, this special issue of the Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal is dedicated to showcasing recent advancements in health care systems engineering. An emphasis is placed on papers detailing new models and methods that have been validated through real-life cases and empirical data, underscoring their practical applicability. We invite submissions from the whole research community where the main topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Please submit your paper online via

and select the Special Issue “Health Care Systems Engineering”. The target print publication date is Spring 2025. The submitted papers must not have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Papers will be reviewed according to the standards of the FSM journal.
