We invite submissions for a special issue on the topic of spatial econometrics and geostatistics. Both theoretical and applied contributions are welcome, particularly those with interesting applications in areas such as environmental sciences, sustainability, finance, geo-engineering, ecology, or network processes.

Spatial econometrics and geostatistics are two closely related fields that deal with analysing spatial and spatiotemporal data. While spatial econometrics focuses on the statistical analysis of spatial panels with an autoregressive dependence structure in discretised space (“areal data”), geostatistics, on the other hand, focuses on the spatial interpolation of data and the estimation of spatial variability in continuous space. With the rapid development of new technologies, and hence new data streams and structures becoming available, the distinction between the two fields based on data structures alone becomes increasingly blurred. This special issue seeks to explore exciting opportunities at the intersection of the two fields along the spatial dimensions of a wide range of economic, environmental, ecological and social phenomena.

Submission topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Spatial econometric models and estimation methods
  • Geostatistical models
  • Bayesian estimation procedures for spatial and spatiotemporal models
  • Spatial dependence and heterogeneity
  • Network models and processes on networks
  • Spatial point processes
  • Statistical learning procedures for geo-data
  • Spatiotemporal interpolation, prediction and extrapolation
  • Cross-validation, model assessment and bootstrap techniques under spatial dependence

We encourage submissions that make significant theoretical or methodological contributions, as well as those that demonstrate the practical application of spatial econometrics and/or geostatistics to real-world problems in a rigorous manner. All papers will undergo a thorough peer-review process, and accepted papers will be published in a special issue of AStA Advances in Statistical Analysis.

Submission guidelines and deadlines will be announced in due course. We look forward to receiving your submissions and to stimulating discussions.

Deadline for submissions: 31 May 2024

Submissions follow the editorial standard of AStA - Advances in Statistical Analysis (this opens in a new tab).
