AStA Advances in Statistical Analysis - Call for Papers: Special Issue on Statistics in Sports

Guest Editors: Andreas Groll (TU Dortmund University) and Dominik Liebl (University Bonn)

As a result of the significant disruption that is being caused by the COVID-19 pandemic we are very aware that many researchers will have difficulty in meeting timelines. Hence, the deadline for submission has been extended to December 31, 2020.

Triggered by advances in data gathering technologies, the use of statistical analyzes, predictions and modeling techniques in sports has gained a rapidly growing interest over the last decades. Today, professional sports teams have access to precise player positioning data and sports scientists design experiments involving non-standard data structures like movement-trajectories. This special issue on statistics in sports is dedicated to foster the development of statistics and its applications in sports. We aim at bringing together statistical articles focusing on (but not limited to): Statistical methods for prediction of game outcomes, for prevention of sports injuries, for analyzing (quasi-)experimental sports science data, measurement and evaluation of player performance, analysis of referee decisions, within-game strategies, etc. In line with the aims and scopes of the journal AStA - Advances in Statistical Analysis, submissions are possible in the following two sections:

  • Statistical Applications: The Statistical Application section provides a forum for innovative use of statistical methods applied to relevant data problems in sports and sports sciences.
  • Statistical Methodology: The Statistical Methodology section publishes original articles on statistical theory and methodological developments. The contributions in this section should be motivated by statistical problems in sports and sports sciences.

Reproducibility. Readers should be able to reproduce the results presented in the articles. Authors are strongly encouraged to make data (or at least their simulated counterparts) and software available provided as electronic supplements. Code should not primarily be included in the article itself although including code snippets is fine if it supports the general aim of the article.

Deadline for submission: 31 December 2020

Submissions follow the editorial standard of AStA - Advances in Statistical Analysis.
