About the editors

Stefano La Rosa is currently associate professor of pathology at the University of Insubria of Varese (Italy) and senior consultant of pathology at the University Hospital of Varese. From 2016 to 2021 he served as associate professor of Pathology at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and as senior consultant of pathology at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV). However, his academic and clinical activity started in Italy in 1997 as consultant of pathology at the University Hospital of Varese (Italy) and assistant professor of pathology at the University of Insubria.

He obtained his medical degree in 1992 and his specialization in Pathology in 1996 at the University of Pavia, Italy.

Prof. La Rosa has an expertise in endocrine pathology, with special reference to digestive neuroendocrine neoplasms, pituitary and thyroid pathology, and diabetes mellitus. His research activity has mainly been focused on the study of prognostic biomarkers in neuroendocrineneoplasms and on pancreatic islet alterations in type 2 diabetes. He is (co)author of about 200 papers on peer-reviewed journals and of about 50 book chapters, including the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Endocrine Organs 4thEdition, the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Digestive System 5th Edition, the WHO Classification of Paediatric Tumours 5th Edition, and the WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumours 5th Edition. He is member of the Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed journals and was member of the Consensus and Editorial Meeting for “WHO Classification of Tumors of Endocrine Organs, 4th Edition”.

He is an active member of the European Society of Pathology (ESP), United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), Endocrine Pathology Society, International Pituitary Pathology Group, Swiss Society of Pathology (SGPath), Pancreatobiliary Pathology Society, and Italian Society of Pathology (SIAPEC). He was the Secretary of the Endocrine Working Group of ESP and member of the Educational Committee of the Pancreatobiliary Pathology Society.

Silvia Uccella is Associate Professor of Pathology and, since 2018, Director of the Residency Program in Anatomic and Surgical Pathology at the University of Insubria, Varese, Italy. She is Senior consultant in the Pathology Service of the University Hospital of Varese, Italy. She obtained her medical degree from the School of Medicine of the University of Pavia, Italy, in 1997, completed her residency in Anatomic and Surgical Pathology in 2002, and subsequently get her PhD in Immunopathology and Degenerative Pathology at the University of Insubria in 2006. Prof. Uccella is an expert endocrine and neuroendocrine pathology, with special reference to neuroendocrine tumours of the digestive system and of the lung, thyroid pathology, and pituitary pathology. Her research activity focusses on the study of biomarkers in endocrine and neuroendocrine tumours and their role as prognostic and diagnostic factors. She has also been actively teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as younger colleagues, in the field of endocrine and neuroendocrine pathology, having been the scientific director and/or invited speaker in several national and international educational events. She is (co)author of more than 100 papers on peer-reviewed journals and of several chapters of endocrine pathology books, including the 5th edition of the WHO classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors. She is member of the Editorial Board of Endocrine Pathology and has served as a reviewer for at least 15 different peer-reviewed journals. Prof Uccella is an active member of European Society of Pathology, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Endocrine Pathology Society, Pancreatobiliary Pathology Society, Pituitary Pathology Club, and Italian Society of Pathology. She is Secretary of the Endocrine Pathology Working Group of the Italian Society of Pathology. She is mother of three sons and lives with her family in Varese.
