In 1969the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) establishedthe Committee on Challenges of Modem Society (CCMS). The subject of air pollution was from the start, one of the priority problems under study within the framework of various pilot studies undertaken by this committee. The organization of a periodicconferencedealing with air pollution modelling and its application has become one of the main activities within the pilot study relating to air pollution. The first five international conferences wereorganizedby the UnitedStatesas the pilot country; the secondfive by the Federal Republic of Germany; the third five by Belgium; the next fourby The Netherlands; and thenextfivebyDenmark;andwiththisonethe lasttwobyPortugal. th This volume contains the papers and posters presented at this 26 NATO/CCMS International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution Modelling and Its Application held in Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkeyduring 26-30May 2003. The key topics distinguished at this ITM included: Roleof Atmospheric Modelsin AirPollutionPolicy and Abatement Strategies; Integrated Regional Modelling; Global and Long-Range Transport; Aerosols as Atmospheric Contaminants; New Developments; and Model Assessment andVerification. 94 participants representing 33 countries from Europe, North America and Asia attended the 26th ITM. The Conference was jointly organized by the University of Aveiro, Portugal (Pilot Country) and by Istanbul Technical University, Turkey (Host Country). Thetotal57oraland24posterpaperswerepresented duringtheconference.
