Das Buch enthält ausgewählte Beiträge von Workshops zur Theorie und Modellierung von Ökosystemen, die von der BTU Cottbus veranstaltet wurden. Schwerpunkte des Buches sind systemtheoretische Grundlagen und dynamische Eigenschaften ökologischer Systeme, Modellierungskonzepte und Anwendungen mathematischer Modelle auf Fließgewässer, Kläranlagen und Agroökosysteme. Insbesondere wird die Verwendung von Informatikwerkzeugen zur Lösung von Umweltaufgaben betont. Dabei spielen neue physikalische und mathematische Sichtweisen zur Ökosystemanalyse und zur Bewertung von Umweltproblemen eine wichtige Rolle.
