Angeles Blanco

Angeles Blanco graduated in 1990 in Industrial Chemistry at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and received her PhD on Chemical Engineering in April 1994. In 1991 she started to work at the Chemical Engineering Department of the UCM where she is now Professor and leader of the Cellulose and Paper Research Group.
(2013) In 1990 she founded her own company "Ecomanagement". During two years she was the Technical Manager. Since 1993 she works full time for the Complutense University. Her research areas are related to Industrial Processes and Environmental Sciences. She has published 98 research papers in JCR journals, 150 papers in conferences (60 invited), she has collaborated in 11 books, 4 patents and in the organisation of 15 international conferences. She has participated in 17 European projects (14 as responsible) and in 49 industrial projects. She has received the “IIBCC 2008 Excellence Award in Recognition of Outstanding Research on Inorganic Bonded Composites”.
She is board member of the European Water Partnership and she is collaborating in the groups of Sustainable Water Management, Water and Energy and Climate Change.. She has been Vice-president of the European Fibre and Paper Research Organisations (EFPRO) during 6 years. She participated in the elaboration of the SRA of the FTP (co-leader of paper value chain) and she was member of the Scientific Council and of the WG of Education. She participated in the elaboration of the Vision Document and the SRA of the WSSTP. She has been the COST Spanish representative for the FPS domain for 15 years she is member of the Research Committee of TAPPI.

Thomas Braunbeck

Thomas Braunbeck is an expert in aquatic toxicology working with endocrine disruptors, cytopathology, histopathology of fish, genotoxicity assessment, neurotoxicity, embryo toxicity and biomarkers. He has 30 years of experience in the area and has published more than 200 international articles and books in this area. As the head of the section Aquatic Ecology and Toxicology Group located at the Center for Organismal Studies at the University of Heidelberg, he has supervised more than 50 PhD and 150 MSc students.
Prof. Dr. Braunbeck is, e.g., member of the Societies of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Ichthyology (GfI), Environmental Mutagenesis (GUM, The European Association of Fish Pathologists (EAFP), The Fisheries Society of the British Isles and The Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. Over the years, he has reviewed manuscripts for over 60 journals and has served as reviewer for numerous national and international grant organizations, e.g., the US National Institute of Health, the US National Science Foundation, the Swiss National Fonds, the Austrian State Science Foundation and the UK National Environmental Research Council. Dr. Braunbeck is a member of the advisory board of the German Environmental Protection Agency (UBA) for ecotoxicological testing methods, the advisory board of the German Federal Minister for Education and Science (BMBF), the OECD expert group for „Endocrine Disruptors”, a member and deputy chairman of the DIN committee „Suborganismic Test Methods - Fish Embryo Test” (German Institute for Standardization) and a member of the DIN expert group „Suborganismic Test Methods - Cytotoxicity Tests“ (German Institute for Standardization).

Thomas Bucheli

(2015) Thomas D. Bucheli studied Environmental Sciences at the ETH Zürich (1987-92). He conducted his PhD at Eawag Dübendorf and received his degree in Natural Sciences from the ETH in 1997 (awarded with the ETH’s Otto Jaag-water protection prize). From 1997 until 2001, he was a Postdoc at ETH Zürich, Department of Chemistry, and at the Institute of Applied Environmental Research (ITM), Stockholm University. He has been Head of the Organic Trace Analysis Group at Agroscope ISS since 2001, and leads the Research Group Environmental Analytics at the same institute since 2014.
Thomas Bucheli has (co-)authored of more than 80 peer reviewed publications (>4300 WoS citations, H-Index: 30), published >30 other papers, and >120 conference contributions. He has (co-)acquired more than 5 Mio CHF of soft money projects from national and international funding sources.
He investigates the occurrence, fate and behaviour of organic chemicals in the agro-environment. His current research focus is on natural toxins, PAHs, carbonaceous nanoparticles, and related sorption and bioavailability studies. Since 2012, he is a (guest) lecturer at ETH.

Yi-Ping Chen

(2016) Professor Yi-ping Chen, male, was born in 1968 and works at the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Science. He attained his Ph.D in 2004 at Northwest University of China and his research interests are in the field of in Environment Biology. He has published 20 papers as first author in international journals such as Nature, Nature Geosciences, Scientific Reports, Environmental science and technology, Ecotoxicology, Environment science and Pollution research, Planta, Plant Science, etc. He is also an executive Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Earth Environment (Chinese Journal).

Actually, Guilherme Dotto is Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). He is a permanent member of the Chemical Engineering post-graduation program. He has a B.Sc. in Food Engineering, an M.Sc. in Food Engineering and a PhD in Food Engineering at Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG). His research is focused on the following areas: transport phenomena, unit operations, wastewater treatment, physicochemical treatments for wastewater and separation processes. In these research areas, has more than 65 published articles and is reviewer of more than 80 international journals. He is an editorial board member of Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering (Elsevier).

Robert Duran

(2012) Robert Duran is Professor in Environmental Molecular Microbiology at the University of Pau. Robert has more than 20 years’ experience in environmental microbiology and molecular microbiology research. He is leading a research team of 30 people including people with permanent position (professors and assistant professors, technicians), post-docs and PhD students. His group publishes an average of 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals per year. His research focuses on microbial ecology and diversity, with an emphasis on extreme, polluted or estuarine ecosystems. He employs a wide-range of techniques (from geochemistry to metatranscriptomics) to address fundamental and practical issues. Relevant recent discoveries include the characterisation of the taxonomic and functional microbial-diversity in extreme and contaminated ecosystems: behaviour of sulfate reducing bacteria populations in acid mine drainage and microbial mats according to the fluctuation of environmental parameters, the diversity of ring hydroxylating dioxygenases in polluted microbial mats.

Céline Guéguen

Dr. Céline Guéguen, Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Sciences and Biogeochemistry, is an associate professor in the department of chemistry at Trent University. A biogeochemist and chemical oceanographer, her work focuses on the processes regulating the transport and bioavailability of metals in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, she is interested in the characterization of aquatic dissolved organic matter in terrestrial and marine waters as well as the impacts of biogeochemical transformation of DOM on metal speciation and toxicity.

Ester Heath

(2012) Ester Heath studied Chemistry at Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She has been employed at Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia since 1991. She carried out the experimental part of M.Sc. at University of Plymouth, Plymouth, Great Britain and graduated in 1994 (M.Sc.) and 1998 (Ph.D.) in Chemistry at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She spent two years on postdoctoral studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Upon her return to Jožef Stefan Institute, she set up a research group to study new emerging contaminants. Currently she is the Head of Laboratory for Organic Analytical Chemistry within the Department of Environmental Sciences, Jožef Stefan Institute and appointed Associate Professor in the Ecotechnology programme at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her main research interest is environmental organic chemistry and she has dedicated the last decade to the cycling and fate of new emerging contaminants during water treatment and in the environment.

Thomas Hein

(2016) Thomas Hein (1968 Austrian citizen) studied biology and limnology at the University of Vienna. In 1997 he started his PhD work at the Department of Limnology of the University of Vienna with a research grant from the FWF. After the finalization of the PhD thesis in 2000 he got a PostDoc position at the University of Vienna. Since 2005 he has a tenure track position in Limnology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU Vienna) and is working group leader at the WasserCluster Lunz research institute. Since 2008 he is managing director at WasserCluster Lunz and since 2010 Associate Professor at BOKU Vienna.
His research career focused on the study of environmental change (flow, extreme events and temperature) and its impacts on river – floodplain systems in temperate and tropical systems. The research also includes effects of restoration and management measures on different ecosystem properties at different temporal and spatial scales. Main topics of research are organic carbon and nutrient cycling, the role of aquatic vegetation (algae and macrophytes), microbial processes and ecosystem metabolism as well as selected topics in biodiversity. A major part of the studies have been performed in the Danube River basin along the main river and tributaries linking different scales starting from the microplot to the ecosystem scale. Intense field observation is coupled with laboratory as well large scale experimental studies and modeling work to analyze underlying mechanisms of ecosystem responses and provide predictive tools for scenario analysis. The fundamental knowledge gained is transferred to stakeholders and authorities to provide strategies and support for the implementation of restoration measures. He was also in involved in several EU Life projects, an EU ETC project in which the application of knowledge was an important aspect. He has been involved in several EU funded projects in FP7 (Wetwin, Dancers, Mars) and is currently involved in an EU H2020 project (AquaCross). He published more than 100 scientific publications (62 in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings), 5 book chapters and authored and co-authored more than 100 scientific reports. Thomas Hutchinson

(2014) Tom Hutchinson has over 25 years’ experience in the ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment of natural and synthetic chemicals, principally with regard to agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. He has recently moved to the University of Plymouth after working in for industry (ICI, ZENECA and AstraZeneca), Plymouth Marine Laboratory and most recently the UK government’s Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS). He has published >100 peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters relating to ecotoxicology, together with numerous technical reports on the environmental risk assessment of chemicals. He chairs the Ecotoxicology Working group of the NC3Rs and is a founder member and Chair of the SETAC Global Advisory Group on Endocrine Disruptor Testing and Risk Assessment (EDTRA). He has also chaired and served on numerous scientific working groups for the OECD, European Environment Agency, European Science Foundation and ECETOC and was recently appointed to the UK government’s Advisory Committee on Pesticides. His primary interests cover the impacts of developmental and reproductive toxicants in fish and invertebrates and the rational utilisation of data for supporting cost-effective environmental risk assessment. He is a Fellow of the Society of Biology and has a BSc degree in biology from King’s College London and a Ph.D. in marine biology from the University of Plymouth. He is an Honorary Professor at Brunel University, UK and the University of Exeter, UK.

Roland Kallenborn

(2013) Roland Kallenborn is a Professor in Organic Chemistry at the Department for Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Sciences (IKBM) at the Norwegian University for Life Sciences (UMB) in Ås, Norway. In addition, he holds an adjunct Professor position (20%) at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), Spitsbergen, Norway. Previously he worked as senior research scientist at the Norwegian institute for Air Research (NILU), department in the Polar Environmental Centre in Tromsø (Norway). For 2005 – 2008, Kallenborn was employed as Professor and Head of Department (Arctic Technology) at the University Centre in Svalbard (Longyearbyen/ Svalbard). Currently, his work focuses mainly on the development of new methods and strategies for the interdisciplinary scientific linkage between trace analytical organochemical technology and bioeffect methods for elucidation of ecotoxicological potential of organochemical xenobiotics. His is author/co-author of ca. 100 peer reviewed scientific publication, 1 monograph and has presented more than 170 oral or poster presentations on international scientific conferences/ workshops and seminars. His recent research interest focuses mainly around three major research topics:
- Evaluation of environmental fate and properties of currently identified contaminants (e.g., perfluorinated alkylated substances, brominated flame retardants, pharmaceutical residues and personal care products).
- Assessing global long range processes of sparsely investigated anthropogenic contaminants.
- Pollution issues in polar regions including risk assessment
- Development of new versatile methods and tools for multi-disciplinary environmental risk evaluations.

Gerhard Lammel

Gerhard Lammel studied Chemistry in Regensburg and Freiburg, Germany, did a doctorate in atmospheric chemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany (in 1988), and his habilitation in environmental chemistry at University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany (in 2000). He became a full professor at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic (in 2007). His teaching encompasses atmospheric and environmental chemistry and global environmental change. His research, pursued at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, University of Hamburg, Masaryk University’s Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment (since 2006) and Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (since 2008), has been focusing on aerosol chemistry and total environmental chemistry of long-lived organic pollutants, mostly based on field experiments and on advanced numerical modelling. He has authored some 100 research papers and contributed to a number of scientific assessment reports (UNEP, IPCC, WHO, UNECE, German Advisory Council on Global Change). He has been serving on various committees, was Chair of the Board of the German Chemical Society Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology branch (2007-2010), and is Member of the European Chemical Societies' Division of Chemistry and the Environment.

Séverine Le Faucheur

Séverine Le Faucheur obtained her Master degree in marine chemistry from the University of West Brittany (France) in 2000. She did her doctoral studies at Eawag (Dübendorf, Switzerland) and received her PhD from ETH Zürich in 2005. Between 2006-2011, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow and associate researcher at INRS-ETE (Québec, Canada). Since 2011, she is a senior researcher and teaching assistant at the department F.-A. Forel for Environmental and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Geneva (Switzerland). Séverine’s research focuses on the biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology of trace metals. She is specialized in the study of metal interactions with microorganisms and her interest spans from metal speciation in natural waters in relation to their bioavailability to their intracellular speciation and their effects at the subcellular to the community levels. She is currently the European co-chair of the SETAC global Mercury working group

Santiago V. Luis

Dr. Santiago V. Luis was born in 1955 (Cariñena, Spain), studied Chemistry at the University of Zaragoza and completed his PhD in Valencia under the direction of Prof. F. Gaviña (1983). After postdoctoral work at the University of Pittsburgh (USA) under the supervision of Prof. J. Rebek (1985), he got a permanent position at the University of Valencia and then a full professorship at the University Jaume I of Castellón in Spain (1995). He is the leader of the Supramolecular and Sustainable group at the University Jaume I. His research interests include Supramolecular Chemistry, in particular pseudopeptides as biocompatible building blocks for recognition, sensing and self-assembly, and sustainable chemistry, in particular involving different aspects of catalysis, biocatalysis and flow chemistry and the work with neoteric solvents like ionic liquids and supercritical fluids. Currently he is member of the Divisions of Chemistry and the Environment (DCE) and Green Chemistry (DGC) of EuCheMS and chair of the DCE.

Elena Maestri

Elena Maestri obtained her degree in Biology at the University of Pavia (1985). The PhD in Genetics (University of Ferrara, 1989) concerned plant responses to starvation. Postdoc positions at the University of Parma concerned abiotic stress response in plants (heat shock, drought). After obtaining a permanent position at the University of Parma in the group led by Prof Nelson Marmiroli, the research activities shifted towards environmental pollution and phytotechnologies, food safety and authenticity, capacity building. Currently Associate Professor in the University of Parma, she lectures in the degrees of “Biotechnology” and of “Sciences for Nature and Environment”. Her activities also involve participation in the Italian Consortium for Environmental Sciences and in the Executive Board of the International Phytotechnology Society.
Prof Elena Maestri has co-authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and delivered over 80 presentations at conferences and congresses. Her current h-index is 21 with over 2200 citations (Scopus, 2016).

Bingcai Pan

(2013) Bingcai Pan received his PhD degree of Environmental Engineering from Nanjing University (China). He has been employed in Nanjing University since 2003. In 2007 he was promoted to be the full professor of Department of Environmental Engineering, (NJU), and currently he serves as the department chair professor. Also, he serves as the deputy director of both State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse and National Engineering Centre for Organic Pollution Control and Resource Reuse (China). His work focused on environmental material-based water and wastewater treatment. In particular, he is interested in development of highly efficient nanocomposites and nanoporous materials for treatment and reuse of contaminated water. He has published nearly 120 peer-reviewed papers and authorized 40 patents in the related fields.

Surresh C. Pillai

(2016) Prof. Suresh C. Pillai obtained his PhD in the area of Nanotechnology from Trinity College Dublin and then performed his postdoctoral research at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA. Upon completion of this appointment he returned to Trinity College Dublin as a Research Fellow before joining CREST-DIT as a Senior Scientist in April 2004. He is an elected fellow of the UK’s Royal Microscopical Society (FRMS) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM). He has also completed an executive MBA from Dublin City University, in 2009. Suresh was responsible for acquiring more than €4 million direct R and D funding. He has published several scientific articles in leading peer reviewed journals has contributed to several book chapters, has presented in more than forty international conferences and has delivered over forty international invited talks. Prof. Pillai has also been invited to deliver keynote/plenary speeches at various international conferences including the IWA Symposium on Environmental Nanotechnology in Nanjing, China (2013), the International Green technology conference, India (2013) and the European Photocatalysis conference in Slovania (2013). He is the lead inventor in two granted US patents (awarded in 2013 and 2015) and one UK patent (awarded in 2015). He was also one of the three co-founders of DIT start-up company Radical Coatings. His research work was featured in the ‘the investigators’ programme RTE-1 TV, Ocean FM radio and in a number of national and international news media. Suresh is a recipient of the ‘Industrial Technologies Award 2011’ for licensing functional coatings to Irish companies. He was also the recipient of the ‘Hothouse Commercialisation Award 2009’ from the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation and also the recipient of the ‘Enterprise Ireland Research Commercialization National Award 2009’. He has also been nominated for the ‘One to Watch’ award 2009 for commercialising R and D work (Enterprise Ireland). One of the nanomaterials based environmental technologies developed by his research team was selected to demonstrate as one of the fifty ‘innovative technologies’ (selected after screening over 450 nominations from EU) at the first Innovation Convention organised by the European Commission on 5-6th December 2011. He is the national delegate and technical expert for ISO standardization committee and European standardization (CEN) committee on photocatalytic materials. He is an editor for the journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR, Springer)

Cinta Porte

Research Professor at IDAEA –CSIC-, Barcelona. She has investigated the mechanism of action of legacy and emerging contaminants at the molecular and subcellular levels by looking at the interference with the synthesis and metabolism of active steroids, both in fish and invertebrates. She is also involved in the development and application of in-vitro techniques to assess the toxicity and mode of action of contaminants and environmental samples in fish and human (JEG-3) cell lines. Recently, her work has focussed on lipidomics (LC-MS/MS) and lipid metabolism to try to understand the interference of pollutants with cellular lipids.

Diane Purchase

Diane Purchase received her BSc and PhD in Microbiology from King’s College London. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Middlesex University in London. Diane is the Honorary Secretary of the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences in the UK and a Fellow of the Institution of Environmental Sciences. She has a long-held interest in the environmental applications of microorganisms and belongs to many microbiological and environmental organisations, such as the British Mycological Society, American Society for Microbiology, International Society for Microbial Ecology and Institution of Environmental Sciences. Diane has over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference papers and book chapters. She is the coordinating editor of Environmental Geochemistry and Health, a Springer Nature journal, the co-editor of Microbial Applications – Recent Advancements and Future Developments, published by De Gruyter and the editor of Fungal Applications in Sustainable Environmental Biotechnology, a Springer Nature publication. She also serves as reviewer of numerous journals, including: Critical Reviews in Biotechnology, FEMS Microbiology Reviews, Journal of Hazardous Materials, PLoS ONE and Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. Diane is committed to promoting sustainability through her research and teaching. She currently chairs an International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) task group to examine the environmental and health challenges of E-waste and its management.

Boqiang Qin

Professor Boqiang Qin, male, was born in 1963 and works at Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Science. He attained his Ph.D in 1993 at the Chinese Academy of Science. His research interests include Hydrology, Limnology, Aquatic Ecology, Paleolimnology. He had been guest editor for four peer-review journal special issues, editor of three books and author of 150 international peer-review journal papers. Michel Sablier has graduated in chemistry from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, where he obtained his PhD in 1992. After a post-doctoral training in the Gorlaeus Laboratories, Leiden (the Netherlands), he joined the CNRS in 1994, and holds now a position of Senior Scientist. His scientific activity has been dedicated to mass spectrometry and its applications in several fields: instrumental development, gas-phase studies of ion-molecule and ion-radical reactions, detection of emerging pollutants in the environment. In particular, the development of original methods for the characterization of radical species gave him the opportunity to develop collaborations in Japan where he stayed for one year in 2000-2001 with a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (National Institute for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba). Beside fundamental chemistry studies, he has always motivated a deep interest for the applications of mass spectrometry to the domain of Cultural Heritage.
Three years ago, he joined the Centre de Recherche sur la Conservation at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. His research now addresses on topics related to conservation science. With a particular focus on cellulosic materials, his current research work concerns the characterization of markers of origin in traditional Asian papers, and the understanding of deterioration mechanisms and contamination mechanisms in ancient papers. All of these studies use modern mass spectrometry methods. Michel Sablier joined ESPR as an editorial board member mid-2012.

Constantini Samara

(2012) Constantini Samara is Professor of Environmental Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She is Head of the Environmental Pollution Control Laboratory accredited to ISO 17025 for sampling and determination of aerosol in the ambient air. She coordinates the Thematic Network of the Aristotle University on «Integrated Research on Air Pollution, AIRnet».
She has extensive involvement in air pollution studies with focus on particulate pollutants, such as heavy metals / toxic elements, toxic or carcinogenic organic compounds, and acidic ionic components. Also, she has developed research activity on the source identification/apportionment by employing receptor modeling. She has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has reviewed manuscripts for over 20 journals. She is member of the advisory boards of Greek Environmental Agencies for air pollution.

Marcus Schulz

Marcus Schulz studied Biology and Geology in Goettingen and obtained his Ph.D. in Biology in 1996 from the University of Goettingen. He worked then for five years at the Institute for Lake Research at Lake Constance on sedimentological and geochemical topics, before he moved to the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin in 2001.
In 2005, he joined the research group on Applied System Sciences at the Institute of Environmental Systems Research of the University of Osnabrueck. During the last ten years, he was teaching at the Universities of Potsdam, Oldenburg and Osnabrueck. In 2015, he obtained the private lecturer degree (PD) in Applied System Sciences from the University of Osnabrueck. Currently, he is working at AquaEcology GmbH and Co. KG in Oldenburg and teaching at the University of Osnabrueck. His main research interests are environmental modelling, applied statistics, biogeochemistry, hydrology and marine litter.

Stuart Simpson

Dr Stuart Simpson is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at the Centre for Environmental Contaminants Research, CSIRO Land and Water, in Sydney, Australia. He has more than 20 years of research experience in water and sediment quality assessments. His main research interests involve the development of cause-effect relationships between contaminants and biological/ecological effects and the development and application of sediment quality guidelines and assessment tools. In addition he has a broad interest in the analytical and environmental chemistry of contaminants in aquatic environments, in particular, the reactivity and processes controlling contaminant bioavailability in both surface waters and sediments.
He applies this research through a wide range of consultancy projects for industry and government, particularly in guideline/assessment framework development for government, and assessing environmental impacts from proposed or active industries. He is the author of some 200 scientific research publications.

Georg Steinhauser

Georg Steinhauser received his MSc in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 2003 and his PhD in radiochemistry in 2005 from Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). In 2007 he worked in the group of Prof. Thomas M. Klapötke at Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich as an Erwin Schrödinger Fellow before returning to TU Wien again. After 10 years at TU Wien he was hired by Colorado State University as Assistant Professor (tenure track) of radiochemistry in 2013. In 2015 he accepted an offer as Professor of physical radioecology by Leibniz Universität Hannover. He authored/co-authored more than 70 papers and 6 book contributions. He joined the Editorial Board of ESPR in 2016. Since 2011 his main research focus is environmental radioactivity after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Hongwen Sun

Hongwen Sun is a professor and deputy dean at College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nankai University, China. She concurrently holds the post of executive vice director of Key Laboratory on Pollution Processes and Environmental Criteria (Nankai University) supported by Ministry of Education of China. She got her Ph. D. from Nankai University in 1994. She conducted postdoctoral research during 1999-2001 at Osaka University, Japan. She visited Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), Switzerland as senior visiting scientist for three month in 2008. Her research interests are environmental chemistry of organic pollutants and remediation for polluted environment. She has coordinated over 25 research projects and participated in other 10 projects. She has authored over 160 journal papers, among which over 60 were published in international journals, and these papers have been cited 400 times by SCI papers. Besides, she is the coauthor of 10 monographs and text books in Chinese. She was honored as Excellent Young Fellow by Ministry of Education, China in 2004. She was elected as National Demonstrating Teacher in 2007. She won the Second Prize on Natural Science honored by Ministry of Education in 2010.

Roberto Terzano

Roberto Terzano is researcher in Agricultural Chemistry at the Department of Soil, Plant and Food Sciences of the University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Italy. He has a Master in Chemistry and attained his Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry in 2005 at the University of Bari, Italy. He has been Marie Curie Fellow at MiTAC (Micro and Trace Analysis Centre) of the University of Antwerp (Belgium). He is the Scientific Manager of the "Micro X-ray Lab" at the University of Bari and Associate Member of IUPAC Division VI "Chemistry and the Environment". His main research interests are the biogeochemistry of trace elements in the environment and the use of X-ray analytical techniques to study agricultural and environmental samples.

Gérald Thouand

Gérald Thouand received his PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Nancy, France, in 1993. He is full professor in microbiology at the University of Nantes, head of the CBAC Bacterial Sensors for Control and Analysis laboratory (UMR CNRS 6144 GEPEA), Deputy for research innovation at the French Ministry of Research (DRRT Pays de La Loire) and Auditor at the Institute of Higher Studies for Science and Technology (IHEST, Paris) .
His research interest includes environmental monitoring of biodegradation and biotechnology using microbial biosystems. He is mainly involved in the development of biosensors for chemical pollutants detection and pathogenic bacteria. He is member of the French Society of Microbiology (SFM, France), the Society for Applied Microbiology (SFAM, UK). He is Associate editor at Environmental Science and Pollution Research and Frontiers in Microbiology, Guest Editor for Analytical Bioanalytical Chemistry (special issue “Microorganisms for analysis”) and Member of the scientific committee of the International Society of Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence.

Vitor Vasconcelos

(2016) Vitor Vasconcelos is a biologist, Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Porto University and a researcher of the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research – CIIMAR, being since 2013 the president of the CIIMAR board.
Director of the Group of Blue Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology (LEGE lab), studying natural toxins and other bioactive substances and their effects in the environmental and human health. The major research lines include the ecological and economic impacts of Harmful Algal and Cyanobacterial Blooms in marine and freshwaters. Studies involve the identification of species using molecular tools, identification of toxins and their impact at various levels of the trophic chain. Risk assessment of those toxins including bioavailability and emergent marine toxins in North Atlantic waters are also studied. Recently, a line on Biotechnological application of secondary metabolites isolated from microorganisms has been developed. Responsible for the LEGE culture collection, an on-growing collection comprising more than 400 strains of cyanobacteria from marine and freshwater origin.
Member of the Associate Editor’s Board of several journals, including Marine Drugs and Toxins. Published more than 250 papers in SCI journals in the areas of Toxicology and Biotechnology (orcid.org/0000-0003-3585-2417).

Vitor Vilar

Dr. Vilar was born in Miragaia, Porto, Portugal in April 1978. He is principal researcher in the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering-Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LSRE-LCM), Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP). He is also “Special Visiting Researcher” in the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, supported by the Ciência Sem Fronteiras Program. He received the graduation in Chemical Engineering in 2001 and the Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2006 at FEUP.
He is the author and co-author of more than 300 scientific publications, including 2 conference books, 7 book chapters, 130 papers in international scientific periodicals with peer review (h index = 24), 8 papers in national scientific periodicals and more than 160 communications in conference proceedings, receiving a total of 8 prizes.
His main research interests focus in environmental assessment and monitoring of surface waters and environmental friendly technologies for pollution control, including advanced oxidation processes, sorption/biosorption, membrane filtration, biological degradation, process integration and intensification, water/waste reuse, recycling and valorization.
He has been involved in 5 international, 10 national R and D projects and 3 contracts with private companies related to the development of environmental friendly technologies for pollution control. V. Vilar is currently one of the editors of Environmental Science and Pollution Research (Springer) and special issue editor for the Chemical Engineering Journal (Elsevier).
V. Vilar completed the supervision of 17 master students, 13 Ph.D. students and 15 postdoctoral researchers. Currently, he is the supervisor of 3 master students, 11 Ph.D. students and 7 postdoctoral researchers. He has been doing tutorial teaching at FEUP in several course units of the integrated master in chemical engineering and environmental engineering. He was also involved in the organization of 3 international scientific conferences and other events/videos for promotion of science and technology. He is also the president of the Iberoamerican Congress of Advanced Oxidation Technologies (CIPOA).

Zhihong Xu 

Professor, School of Natural Sciences, and Director, Environmental Futures Research Institute, Griffith University, Australia

Professor Zhihong Xu is involved in various research topics : biogeochemical processes of carbon and nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems from agricultural, agroforestry and forest ecosystems; development and application of innovative stable isotope, biomolecular and physiological techniques for assessing both genetic and environmental controls of plant water and nutrient use efficiency; soil fertility and plant nutrition; environmental management and food security and innovative tree ring technologies for unravelling long-term and complex impacts of climate change and local management/historical episodes on biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem productivity and sustainability.
He is the Director of “Environmental Future Research Institute” at Griffith University (Brisbane , Australia). Since 2006, he has also served as the Chair for the Forest Soils Working Group of International Union of Soil Science. He is also currently the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Soils and Sediments (JSS), a sister journal of ESPR. He has also editorial duties in various journals (e.g. Environ. Geochem. Health and Pedosphere). He is a regular assessor of research grant applications from leading international funding bodies (e.g. National Science Foundation of USA, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the International Science Foundation in Sweden). He has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and leading universities in China. He is also the coordinator of numerous collaborative research projects all around the world."
