Letter from the Editor-in-Chief

Continuous Article Publishing

Effective 2013, Water, Air, & Soil Pollution has changed its publication structure from paginated issues to a new publication model: Continuous Article Publishing.
This means that papers will be published immediately after acceptance in a volume/issue. The Online First queue has become obsolete and the result will be a much shorter time to publication in its final form.
Articles will no longer be paginated sequentially by issue. Therefore every article will start on page 1. Page numbers will not be used for article citation but every article will have a citation ID number, called the ArticleCitationID. The ArticleCitationID replaces the page numbers in the citation line. The citation line includes the journal citation title, year of publication, volume number and ArticleCitationID.
Example:
Old: Water Air Soil Pollut (2012) 223:29–47
New: Water Air Soil Pollut (2013) 224:1234
This method of citation is recognized by the Web of Science/Journal Citation Reports (ISI).
We feel that our authors and readers will benefit from this change in the publication structure of Water, Air, & Soil Pollution.

Authorship Guidelines

Description of Article Types

The journal welcomes a variety of article types:
Research Manuscripts
Regular research manuscripts contain new research findings in their respective fields. These include presentation of new hypotheses and experiments, concepts or theories, development of innovative experimental or numerical methods, novel applications of existing methods and models, or presentation of new, significant case studies.
The journal will not consider submissions of limited international interest or lacking a substantial impact on environmental pollution research. In addition, papers that merely comprise data collections, based on the use of routine analytical or bioanalytical methods, are not acceptable. Repetition of already published knowledge, simply applied to the local level, will not be considered, nor will papers that do not highlight and explain clearly the new science versus the current knowledge.
Research manuscripts may comprise a maximum of 20 journal pages, including figures, tables and references. One journal page corresponds to about 800 words. In exceptional cases, authors are advised to contact the Editor-in-Chief prior to submission of the script. All submitted papers will undergo a rigorous peer-review.
Short Communications
Research that does not meet the criteria for full research papers may be submitted as Short Communications. Short Communications are restricted to reports of unusual urgency, timeliness, and significance. A brief statement explaining how the manuscript meets the criteria of urgency and significance should be included in the author´s remarks at submission. They should contain about 1000 words of text, a maximum of two tables and/or figures and no more than 20 references.
Letters to the Editor, Comments and Replies
Within this section, brief communications to the Editor-in-Chief and to the scientific community will be published. Additionally, any short scientific comment on a previously published research article may be submitted. Prior to publication of such comments, the Editor-in-Chief may seek a reply from the author(s) of the original research article. The aim of this section is to enhance the written scientific debate.
At the Editor-in-Chief’s discretion there may or may not be peer-review of the content.
Review Articles
In this section, contributions will be published that contain no original new data but summarize existing information and synthesize recent findings. These manuscripts contain critical, state-of-the-art reviews with the objectives of critically evaluating existing knowledge and providing background information for future significant research.
Authors who wish to review a particular topic should consult the Editor-in-Chief prior to submission of the manuscript. It should be noted that review scripts will undergo a similar peer review procedure as regular research papers. Length is generally not to exceed 35 journal pages.
Mini-Reviews
These papers follow the same conditions as review articles, but may be shorter in length (up to 8000 words maximum).
Perspectives
Perspective articles are a blend between a commentary and a mini-review, providing an opinion-driven perspective on a significant research topic. Authors can present a provocative perspective supported by data and published literature that stimulates future research. Perspectives are about 3,000 words, and contain no more than a total of 1-3 figures and/or tables. The authors are generally recognized as experts in their respective disciplines.
Book Reviews
Books for review are invited and information should be sent directly to the Editor-in-Chief.
Special Issues
As of 2013, special issues will not be considered for publication in this journal.

Two such services are provided by our affiliates Nature Research Editing Service and American Journal Experts. Springer authors are entitled to a 10% discount on their first submission to either of these services, simply follow the links below.
Please note that the use of a language editing service is not a requirement for publication in this journal and does not imply or guarantee that the article will be selected for peer review or accepted.

    Aims and Scope

    Close

Water, Air, & Soil Pollution is an international, interdisciplinary journal on all aspects of pollution and solutions to pollution in the biosphere. This includes chemical, physical and biological processes affecting flora, fauna, water, air and soil in relation to environmental pollution. Because of its scope, the subject areas are diverse and include all aspects of pollution sources, transport, deposition, accumulation, acid precipitation, atmospheric pollution, metals, aquatic pollution including marine pollution and ground water, waste water, pesticides, soil pollution, sewage, sediment pollution, forestry pollution, effects of pollutants on humans, vegetation, fish, aquatic species, micro-organisms, and animals, environmental and molecular toxicology applied to pollution research, biosensors, global and climate change, ecological implications of pollution and pollution models. Water, Air, & Soil Pollution also publishes manuscripts on novel methods used in the study of environmental pollutants, environmental toxicology, environmental biology, novel environmental engineering related to pollution, biodiversity as influenced by pollution, novel environmental biotechnology as applied to pollution (e.g. bioremediation), environmental modelling and biorestoration of polluted environments.

Articles should not be submitted that are of local interest only and do not advance international knowledge in environmental pollution and solutions to pollution. Articles that simply replicate known knowledge or techniques while researching a local pollution problem will normally be rejected without review. Submitted articles must have up-to-date references, employ the correct experimental replication and statistical analysis, where needed and contain a significant contribution to new knowledge. The publishing and editorial team sincerely appreciate your cooperation.

Water, Air, & Soil Pollution publishes research papers; short communications (urgent and significant research, generally not exceeding two journal pages); letters to the editor/comments/replies; review articles; mini-reviews; perspectives and book reviews.

Note that special and topical issues published from 2001-2009 were published in the companion journal Water, Air, & Soil Pollution: Focus (see ISSN 1567-7230). Special issues from 2010 forward are published in the mother journal, Water, Air, & Soil Pollution.
