Editors of the Springer Handbook of Robotics honored with three awards

During the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2010) held in Anchorage, Alaska, the first week of May, three Springer editors and authors were honored with prestigious awards from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS).
Oussama Khatib, Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University, received the IEEE RAS Pioneer in Robotics and Automation Award for his fundamental pioneering contributions in robotics research, visionary leadership, and life-long commitment to the field. Bruno Siciliano, Professor of Control and Robotics at University of Naples Federico II, was honored with the IEEE RAS Distinguished Service Award to acknowledge his outstanding leadership and commitment in promoting robotics and automation and RAS as the number one Society in the field. He was President of RAS in 2008/09. Dr. Alexander Zelinsky from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Sydney received the IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production for outstanding contributions to robotic technologies that have been commercialised in the automotive, sports and health care industries. The awards were presented by the current RAS President Kazuhiro Kosuge during the Awards Ceremony at ICRA 2010 in Anchorage.

Springer is one of the leading publishers in this field and has excellent contacts to this community, not only in the field of robotics, but also in biomechanics, haptics, neurosciences, virtual simulation, animation, surgery, computational intelligence and sensor networks among others,” said Thomas Ditzinger, Senior Editor, Engineering and Applied Sciences at Springer who attended the awards ceremony in Anchorage.
In 2009 the PROSE Award for Excellence in Physical Sciences and Mathematics was given to the Springer Handbook of Robotics which was also the winner in the subcategory Engineering and Technology. It is considered the most authoritative publication in this modern and growing scientific discipline. Bruno Siciliano and Oussama Khatib are the editors of the handbook, while Alexander Zelinsky is a part editor and author.
Bruno Siciliano and Oussama Khatib are also editors of the book series STAR (Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics) which publishes new developments and advances in the fields of robotics research. Furthermore, Professor Siciliano has published several monographs and textbooks with a special focus on robot modelling and control with Springer.
Since 1998, the IEEE RAS Pioneer Award has recognized individuals who by virtue of initiating new areas of research, development or engineering, have had a significant impact on the development of the robotics and/or automation fields. The award is intended for people who are in the mid or late portions of their careers.
The IEEE RAS Distinguished Service Award, established in 2001, recognizes individuals who have performed outstanding service for the benefit and advancement of IEEE RAS. Criteria for this recognition are the impact of service and contributions to the Society, leadership, innovation, activity, duration, breadth of participation and cooperation.
The IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production, established in 2007, recognizes original innovative research and concepts which have been evolved into a commercialized product based on the fundamental robotics and automation technology introduced by the researcher. The current and future impact of the commercial product is a fundamental element of the merit for selection.
