Springer awards 2016 B. John Davies Best Paper Prize

Prize awarded by Springer’s International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology

The editorial board of the International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (IJAMT) has selected the following professors:
Wanqun Chen, Lihua Lu, Hao Su and Qingchun Zhang from the Center for Precision Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, People’s Republic of China
Kai Yang Army Aviation Institute, Beijing 101123, People’s Republic of China
Dehong Huo, School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 7RU, UK
For their co-authored paper published winners of the B. John Davies Best Paper Prize for a paper published in 2015, entitled “A novel machine tool design approach based on surface generation simulation and its implementation on a fly cutting machine tool”, published in the Int J Adv Manuf Technol (2015) 80:829–837. Enjoy free access to this article until 30 Nov, 2016
The paper presents a novel machine tool design approach based on surface generation simulation and evaluation. This design approach bridges the gap between the machine tool performance and the surface topography generation. The main influential multi-scale factors of surface topography are discussed and modeled using different methods. In addition, by introducing the test software at the early machine tool design stage, the disparity of the surface topography indicators between the simulation results and the design requirements are compared, which can indicate the directions for the optimal design of the machine parameters, such as straightness and dynamic performance. An ultra-precision fly cutting machine tool was designed following the guidelines of this approach, and machining trials were carried out to evaluate and validate the approach and the simulation presented.
The prize was first unveiled in 2014 for recognizing exceptional articles published in IJAMT, and to award authors for having made the significant contribution. The award was named after the late B. John Davies, the founding editor-in-chief of the journal.
“After receiving 3,794 papers submitted for publication to the journal, and accepting 1,544 for publication, we are pleased to recognize the professors for their outstanding paper,” said Andrew Y.C. Nee of the National University of Singapore, editor-in-chief for IJAMT. “The selection process was rigorous and involved several rounds of shortlisting, basing on nomination and comments from the reviewers and scrutiny by the regional editors. We are delighted to make them the 2015 winners for this prize from our journal – their paper deserves this recognition considering both outstanding scientific and application values.”
Anthony Doyle, Springer’s publishing editor for the journal remarked, “B. John Davies was a pioneer in this field, and we are delighted to recognize outstanding work on behalf of our authors with an award bearing his name. And the work of Professors Chen, Lu, Su, Zhang, Yang and Huo certainly deserve this level of recognition.”
The award carries with it a certificate and a prize of US $5,000, provided by Springer.

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology bridges the gap between pure research journals and the more practical publications on advanced manufacturing and systems. It therefore provides an outstanding forum for papers covering applications-based research topics relevant to manufacturing processes, machines and process integration.

Published papers will continue to be to a high standard of excellence. This is ensured by subjecting each paper to a strict assessment procedure by members of the international editorial advisory board. The objective is firmly to establish that papers submitted do meet the requirements, especially in the context of proven applications-based research work. It is not acceptable that papers have a theoretical content alone, papers must demonstrate manufacturing applications.

The journal covers the full range of advanced manufacturing technology, including:
    •         Machining and forming technology
    •         Non-traditional material removal processes
    •         Machine tools technology
    •         Materials joining
    •         Laser technology and applications
    •         Micro and nano-fabrication
    •         Robotics, mechatronics and manufacturing automation
    •         Precision engineering, inspection, measurement and metrology
    •         Sustainable and green manufacturing
    •         Additive manufacturing
    •         Computer-integrated manufacturing systems
    •         Application of evolutionary computing techniques in manufacturing operations
    •         Manufacturing planning, optimization and simulation
    •         Smart Manufacturing
    •         Virtual Manufacturing
