Born in Valencia, March 28th 1953. Married, 3 children
Dr. Eugenio Oñate is a Civil Engineer. His activity in the last 35 years has combined in a balanced manner an academic career as Professor of Structural Mechanics at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), a research career in the field of numerical methods and their application to engineering and the transfer of the results of his research to the industrial sector. His research in the field of numerical methods and software for the analysis and design of structures, fluid dynamics and industrial manufacturing processes are internationally recognized. His scientific contributions and software derived from his research activity are of particular relevance to the solution of problems in the field of civil, industrial, aerospace, marine and naval engineering, among others.
He has published 289 papers in prestigious international journals as well as several books in Spanish and English. He has 4532 citations and an h-index of 34.
Among his scientific achievements we note the development of new numerical methods for the study of the safety of structures under the effects of water currents, with application to the study of the safety of dams, breakwaters in harbours and building structures, in presence of large waves, flooding or tsunamis. His work in this field has been awarded in 2010 with an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council of the European Community (EC). The Grant has a budget of 2.5 million Euros for research in the field during the next five years. The Advanced Grant is the most important award of the EC to individual scientists.
His professional activity has combined teaching, research and technology transfer as well as his participation as manager in international scientific organizations. On March 1987 he founded CIMNE (International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering, www.cimne.com), a research center specialized in the development and application of numerical methods in engineering. Since 1987-he is the Executive Vice-President and Director of CIMNE. This center has grown to employ some 200 scientists and engineers from 25 different countries involved in research activities on different fields of engineering and applied sciences. In 2002 he created the CIMNE Classroom Network. This network incorporates 26 centers created by cooperation between CIMNE and five universities in Spain and in nine Latin American countries. CIMNE has received many prestigious Awards.
He was a founder and first president of the Spanish Society of Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI) and was also president of the European Community for Computational Mechanics in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) and of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). He has been the driving force behind the creation of ten technology-based companies in Spain that market worldwide the products and software resulting from his research. He has received numerous awards and honours at international level.

    Archives of Computational Methods in Engineering provides an active forum for the dissemination of results in both research and advanced practice in computational engineering, with particular emphasis on mechanics and its related areas. The journal exclusively publishes extended state-of-the-art reviews in selected areas, a unique feature of the journal. Reviews published in the journal not only offer a survey of the current literature, but also a critical exposition of the topic in its full complexity.

    A partial list of topics includes modeling; solution techniques and applications of computational methods in a variety of areas (e.g., liquid and gas dynamics, solid and structural mechanics, bio-mechanics, etc.); variational formulations and numerical algorithms related to implementation of the finite and boundary element methods; finite difference and finite volume methods; and other basic computational methodologies.
