International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering

The IFMBE is an association of constituent societies and organizations which was established in 1959 to encourage and promote international collaboration in research and practice of the profession as well as in the management of technology and the use of science and engineering in medicine and biology for improving health and quality of life. Its activities include participation in the formulation of public policy and the dissemination of information through publications and forums. IFMBE as the only international organization and WHO/UN accredited NGO covering the full range of biomedical/clinical engineering, healthcare, and healthcare technology management, is representing through its 50 national and international member societies more than 120.000 professionals involved in the issues of improved health care delivery.
The IFMBE is associated with the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM). Through the IUPESM, IFMBE is a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU).

The IFMBE publishes the journal Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing, which covers all fields of Medical and Biological Engineering and Sciences.
The IFMBE News Magazine, published electronically, keeps the members informed of the developments in biomedical engineering and in the Federation.
In co-operation with its World Congress and regional conferences, IFMBE issues the IFMBE Proceedings Series.
The official IFMBE book series, Biomedical Engineering represents another service to the Biomedical Engineering Community. The books in this series describe applications of science and engineering in medicine and biology and are intended for both graduate students and researchers. They cover many topics in the field of medical and biological engineering, clinical engineering as well as medical physics, medical and bioinformatics, radiotherapy and clinical research.

Mission and Goals

The mission of the IFMBE is to encourage, support, represent and unify the world-wide Medical and Biological Engineering Community in order to promote health and quality of life through the advancement of research, development, application and management of technology. The goals of the IFMBE are:
  • to foster the creation, dissemination and application of medical and biological engineering knowledge and the management of technology for improved health and quality of life;
  • to promote the development of the medical and biological engineering profession, and the recognition and awareness of the profession by the public;
  • to advance communication and collaboration between national and trans-national societies, industry, government and non-governmental organizations engaged in health care and in biomedical research and its applications;
  • to recommend policies and provide guidelines in appropriate professional, educational and ethical areas;
  • to conduct programs which will serve to encourage young people entering the field and their development in the early stages of their career

Structure and Governance

The Administrative Council of the IFMBE meets once a year and is the steering body for the IFMBE. The Council is subject to the rulings of the General Assembly, which meets every three years on the occasion of the World Congress.
The Federation has two divisions: Clinical Engineering and Technology Assessment in Health Care. Additional special interest groups are the regional working groups: Africa/ICHTM, Asian-Pacific, Coral, Developing Countries, and the scientific working groups: Cellular Engineering, Neuroengineering, and Physiome.

Every three years the IFMBE holds a World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in co-operation with IOMP (International Organization for Medical Physics) and IUPESM (International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine). In addition, annual, milestone and regional conferences are organized in different regions of the world, e.g. in the European (EMBEC), Asia-Pacific, Nordic-Baltic, Mediterranean, African and South American regions.
IFMBE cooperates with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the fields of medical, biological, clinical and hospital engineering, management of biomedical technology and technology development, assessment and transfer, resource building and patient safety.
