The Nightingale Prize

for the best scientific paper published in MBEC in 2007 was awarded to ‘An effective non-parametric method for globally

clustering genes from expression profiles’ by Hou et al. Springer congratulates the winners and offers free access to the winning paper

IPEM & IFMBE
The Journal Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing
is published by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and was founded in the year 1963. The first Editor in Chief of MBEC was Alfred Nightingale, a very active man who died too young in 1963 at the age of 40, just before the first issue was launched. Alfred Nightingale was President of the Biological Engineering Society and worked for the British admiralty on electronic underwater sound detectors which may be seen as a precursor of the present day ultrasound technology. In honour of this great biomedical engineer and his contribution to scholarship the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and IFMBE revived the annual Nightingale Prize for the best scientific paper in MBEC.

The Winner

The paper selected for the 2007 Nightingale Prize is entitled ‘An effective non-parametric method for globally clustering genes from expression profiles’ by Hou et al. The authors are from two different institutions in Australia: the School of Engineering and Information Technology, Deakin University Burwood and The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Parkville. According to an expert reviewer: ‘The key strength is the interesting novel algorithm for studying clustering genes and the paper outlines in welcome detail the mathematical underpinnings of this approach. The method was validated on both synthetic and real datasets’. We wholeheartedly congratulate the authors on their outstanding achievement.
