Special Issue on Big Data and Situation-aware Technology for Smarter Healthcare 

This special issue aims to investigate the big data analysis and situation-aware technology in healthcare and innovations. The interaction between technology and healthcare has been a popular research topic. Nowadays, the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) and big data technology, as well as the public embracement of miniature wearable biosensors have generated new opportunities for situation-aware mHealth and uHealth healthcare systems. Compared to the traditional healthcare systems, a wearable computing-based healthcare application is advantageous in many ways from the on-spot mode to in-mobility and in-ubiquitous situation-aware modes. The Big Data could be realized and covers all core issues of database technology. From the raw data collection, data preprocess, storage structures, and data mining for the efficient management of very large data volumes have been developed. However, many challenges need to be addressed in order to develop consistent, suitable, safe, flexible and real-time healthcare systems fit for two undesirable features: streaming nature data collection with IoT environment and situation-aware care deficiency. The issue will explore how individual or hospital can gain benefits by using novel situation-aware technologies in real-world settings through exploitation of big data technologies. It will also encourage research that uses empirical studies to present the fundamental theory, techniques, applications and practical experiences in the context of smart healthcare-wearable sensors, body area sensors, IoT, and big data analytics that take advantage of advances in bioinformatics domain. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
-Algorithms for big data analytics and data mining on biology database
-Big data tools, services, and infrastructures on clouds
-Cloud-enabled body sensor networks
-Context-aware, Emotion-aware, Location-based and other Novel Healthcare Services
-Data mining techniques for wireless sensor data
-Data streams mining techniques
-Internet of things (IoT) for biomedicine and healthcare applications
-Novel devices and circuits, and architectural support for healthcare-aware IoT
-Secure middleware for eHealth and IoT
-Wearable Computing, Mobile Cloud Computing for Situation-aware Healthcare
-Data fusion, compression and pre-processing methodologies
-Techniques to address specific challenges in data stream mining (e.g., drifts, noise levels, high-dimensionality,...)
-Decision making and predictive systems
Prospective authors are invited to submit research contributions representing original and previously unpublished work. Authors should follow the JMBE manuscript format as described in the Information for Authors. Submitted paper will be carefully reviewed. Deadline for paper submission is on January 31, 2017. Author will be notified of final decision by May 31, 2017.

    The purpose of Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering, JMBE, is committed to encouraging and providing the standard of biomedical engineering. The journal is devoted to publishing papers related to clinical engineering, biomedical signals, medical imaging, bio-informatics, tissue engineering, and so on. Other than the above articles, any contributions regarding hot issues and technological developments that help reach the purpose are also included.
    ■JMBE is published bimonthly in February, April, June, August, October and December since February 2009.

    ■JMBE is officially affiliated with the Taiwanese Society of Biomedical Engineering; the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES) and World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE).
