Background 

An electronics engineer by training (Dublin City University), from 1989 to 1994 I developed embedded hardware and software systems for a control and communications company, and I also ran the design department's ISO 9001 and product engineering programs.
I was a partner in a campus company from 1995 to 1999, managing our feasibility study on a new imaging technology - patenting, prototype/product development, licensing, tradeshow demonstrations, test implementations.
Moving to Heidelberg in 2000 to join Springer, I've been with the Computer Science Editorial team since 2002.
