Springer Science Reviews is a new multidisciplinary journal across the life, biomedical and directly related sciences, which aims to tap into a small, highly selected, portion of the large body of literature reviews produced by PhD students every year. The aim of the journal is to promote multi- inter- and trans-disciplinary communication among young researchers, and, while submissions from established researchers are welcome, we will be specifically encouraging submissions from outstanding researchers in the early stages of their publishing career.
Crossing boundaries is a key feature of the Springer Science Reviews – whether they be the boundaries between disciplines or the boundaries between science, policy and practice. This is in recognition of the fact that some of the biggest questions in the history of science have been answered using a multidisciplinary approach. William Smith, the “father” of English geology, combined his skills as a mining surveyor with existing information on fossil deposition to develop the principle of faunal succession some 30 years before Charles Darwin’s famous voyage to the Galapagos triggered Darwin’s famous thinking; 100 years later, astronomer AE Smith applied his knowledge of solar variations with his own observations on tree growth to found the discipline of dendrochronology; another 100 years on, architect Mick Pearce and engineers at Arup Associates collaborated on the design and construction of an air-conditioned office complex modeled on the biological understanding of self-cooling mounds of the southern African termite, Macrotermes michaelseni. The resulting building uses 90% less energy for ventilation than conventional buildings its size, and has saved the building owners more than $3.5 million in air-conditioning costs.
One of the key goals of the Springer Science Reviews is to actively promote this kind of cross-fertilisation and trans-boundary thinking, publishing the biological and directly related social and physical sciences side-by-side.
The journal will be inviting and accepting nominations for publication by outstanding research students. In addition, we strongly encourage the submission, by established experts, of review articles on topics which are of direct relevance to early career researchers, or which explicitly explore the crossing of disciplinary or sectoral boundaries.
