SpringerOpen is our portfolio of over 195 peer-reviewed, fully open access journals and more than 50 open access books covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, the humanities and social sciences. Publishing with SpringerOpen makes your work freely available online for everyone, immediately upon publication.
Springer’s high-level peer-review, publishing and production processes apply for our SpringerOpen journals and books in precisely the same way they do for titles with the subscription-based model, guaranteeing the quality and reliability of the work.
Launched in June 2010, our SpringerOpen journal portfolio covers all areas of science, technology, medicine, the humanities and social sciences. It ranges from very specialized titles to SpringerPlus, our interdisciplinary open access journal.
Benefits of publishing in a SpringerOpen journal include:
- High visibility thanks to unrestricted online access
- Easy compliance with open access mandates, as all articles are CC BY licensed
- Authors retain the copyright to their work
- Re-use and immediate deposit of final article version in any repository
- Article-level metrics including citations, downloads and social media mentions
SpringerOpen journals charge a publication fee which varies from journal to journal. However, many of our journals are fully sponsored by a society or institution so authors do not have to pay an article-processing charge (APC).
Springer Plus - Our interdisciplinary open access journal
Published under the SpringerOpen brand, SpringerPlus is our peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary and fully open access journal accepting high-quality research across all areas of science, including interdisciplinary studies, emerging areas of research, highly descriptive studies, negative results and large data reports.
Manuscripts are not evaluated according to their subject, perceived importance, novelty or ability to attract citations. Evaluations are mainly based on the quality and scientific soundness of the article, allowing quick decision-making and an efficient publication process.
In August 2012, the growing demand for open access publishing has led Springer to expand our open access program to fully open access books as a further addition to our established SpringerOpen journal portfolio. Authors in all disciplines now have the opportunity to publish open access books, including complete monographs, edited volumes, proceedings and SpringerBriefs.
SpringerOpen books are published under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC) license and the open access eBook version is freely accessible online to anyone. In addition, we offer a print edition at a reduced price. The eBook is automatically included in Springer’s eBook collections at no additional cost, so if your library offers the respective Springer eBook Collection, the printed book is also exclusively available for you as a MyCopy softcover edition.
Open access membership programTop
Together with BioMed Central we offer an open access membership program, which enables academic and research institutions, societies and funders to actively support open access by removing some or all of the financial cost (APC) from the individual author.
Authors at member institutions can publish their work in any SpringerOpen and BioMed Central journal at a reduced rate or even no cost at all, and are entitled to a 15% discount on the publication fee when they publish a SpringerOpen book.
We currently have over 480 institutional open access membership agreements in more than 50 countries. Visit the SpringerOpen website to find out whether your institution is a member.
If your institution is not an open access member, visit our open access funding page to find out how the open access publication charge can be covered.
