On August 23, 2012, James B. Serrin passed away at the age of 85. He was perhaps best known for his contributions on partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis and continuum mechanics, and was awarded several prizes for his research. His monograph “The Maximum Principle” (with P. Pucci) appeared in the Birkhäuser program in 2007. He was the author of a great number of articles in various journals, and served as editor for several journals and books, including works for Birkhäuser and Springer. A selection of his articles will be published in two volumes of the series "Contemporary Mathematicians" in 2013. James will be greatly missed – both as an open, warm-hearted person and as a mathematician of great merit.
