Physics of Megathrust Earthquakes 

Megathrusts at subduction zones or continental collisions produce some of the largest earthquakes, often with global repercussions. Many aspects of the physics and geometry of these plate boundaries remain unknown, making quantitative predictions of seismic hazards difficult. In this issue, we welcome contributions that advance our understanding of the physics of megathrusts and their tectonic context. Of particular interest are contributions that discuss the coupling between short-term and long-term tectonics, the role of geometry and rheology of the plate interface and the bulk rocks. We welcome discussions about the interactions between slow and fast ruptures, or even a wider spectrum of mechanical instabilities, and their implications for seismic and tsunami hazards. Considering the tectonic setting as a system, we encourage discussions about the thermo-mechanical coupling within the lithosphere-asthenosphere system, including distributed deformation of the bulk rocks in the mantle wedge or in serpentinized regions. We encourage submissions from seismology, geodesy, geology, and modeling with equal enthusiasm.
Topical issues at PAGEOPH are peer-reviewed (with the possibility of rejection) and have an impact factor of 1.81. The publication is free of charge, except for open access, which is available for USD 3,000.
The submission deadline is January 1st, 2018.
There is no page limit. Papers will be published online shortly after being accepted. All accepted manuscripts will be published both as a topical issue of the journal PAGEOPH followed later (about one month) as a Book Reprint. Review papers are encouraged.

Earthquakes and Multi-hazards around the Pacific Rim, Vol. II  

“Earthquakes and Multi-hazards around the Pacific Rim” is a special issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics (PAGEOPH) focusing on numerical, observational and laboratory studies relevant to simulations and forecasting of earthquake processes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami inundation, and other categories of natural hazards. Special topics of particular interest include the proposed Global Navigation Satellite System Tsunami Early Warning technology. More fine-grained topics include physical mechanisms of earthquakes and friction; earthquake source parameter scaling; macro-scale simulation of earthquake ruptures and seismic cycles; recent large earthquakes around the world; wave propagation simulations; studies of novel computational environments and efficient algorithms; as well as data assimilation and model applications.
After the first announcement of call for papers released in October 2015, nearly 30 manuscripts have been received and about half of them have been by now accepted and published online, they will constitute Vol. I.
Here we solicit some more submissions for Vol. II. We especially invite review papers related to the main subject of the special issue on simulations and forecasting of earthquakes and other natural hazards.

Open Call on New Zealand Earthquake (Mw 7.9) and Tsunami of November 13, 2016 

A short time ago, on 13 November 2016, a major earthquake (Mw 7.9) occurred near the coast of New Zealand. This earthquake created a significant tsunami that was recorded by a great number of coastal tide gauges and open-ocean DART stations. The maximum observed trough-to-crest wave height was more than 4 m.
We invite you to submit research on any aspect of this event to PAGEOPH. Also welcome are studies and comparisons with former earthquakes in that region.
For all submitted papers, we guarantee a professional and fast review and production process.

Open Call on Central Italy Earthquake Crisis starting August 24 2016 

The seismic sequence in Central Italy started on August 24, 2016 with a magnitude 6.0 event followed by an aftershock sequence, and a second major event of magnitude 6.5 on October 30 2016 located 20 km north of it. The October event is close to a magnitude 5.4 event that occurred just one hour after the 24 August main shock. The area covered by the events with magnitude >4 that occurred between August and October 2016 has a diameter of 55 km.
Papers are invited that analyze the time-space evolution of the seismicity together with the possible causal relationships between the events. In addition comparisons with other earthquake series and/or other observations are encouraged. Also welcome are studies and comparisons with former earthquakes in that region.
