8 Is there any funding available for open access?

To support the benefits of OA, a large number of funders and institutions have made open access part of their general funding or have created central funds dedicated to covering APCs for their researchers, faculty, or members. There are more than 100 funds available to authors and the number continues to grow. Organizations such as the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and the World Bank have also started establishing special funds for OA books. A list of OA funds can be found online in the Open Access Directory.
There are also membership programs that institutions can join to financially support their affiliated researchers. Springer offers an Open Access Membership Program together with BioMed Central, which enables academic and research institutions, societies and funders to actively support open access publishing by covering some or all of the costs for their individual authors. Authors at member institutions can publish in any SpringerOpen and BioMed Central journal at a reduced rate or even no cost at all. And if they wish to publish a SpringerOpen book they will receive a 15% loyalty discount on the publication fee. There are already over 450 member institutions in more than 50 countries.
