Springer Open Choice

What is Springer Open Choice?

Springer operates a program called Open Choice for the majority of its journals. Open Choice allows authors to decide how their articles are published in the leading and highly respected subscription-based journals that Springer publishes.
Choosing open access means making your journal article freely available to everyone, everywhere in exchange for your payment of an open access publication fee (US$ 3,000 /
EUR 2,200 excl. VAT).
The final published version of all articles can be archived in institutional or funder repositories and can be made publicly accessible immediately. By opting for Open Choice the article will be automatically sent to PubMed Central/UK PubMed Central.
Open access articles which are ordered through the Open Choice program are clearly identified as open access, in the article PDF and HTML, in the article metadata and they are highlighted with the orange open access button on SpringerLink.

Copyright and Open Access License

If authors choose open access in the Springer Open Choice program, they will not be required to transfer their copyright; the copyright remains with the author.
Springer permits commercial use for Open Choice, as all Open Choice articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license from January 16, 2012 onwards.

Choosing Open Choice

You can decide to publish your article with open access during the MyPublication process. Once your article has been accepted for publication, you will receive an email from Springer with a link to your MyPublication pages. In these pages you can choose for your article to be published with open access in return for your payment of an open access publication fee of US $3,000/ EUR 2,200. Customers providing payment from the Americas will be charged in US$; customers providing payment from Europe, Africa and Asia will be charged in EUR. VAT is not included in the price and will be added, at a standard rate, for customers who receive invoices in Euros. The open access publication fee does not replace any existing journal policies publication costs to be paid by the author, which are billed separately (e.g. surcharges for color in print, oversized articles, etc.).

Institutional Open Choice arrangements

Some institutions have made direct agreements with Springer which cover the article processing fee for Open Choice. The 'MyPublication' process clearly indicates the eligible institutions. If an author indicates his/her affiliation in the 'MyPublication' process the article will be published open access. The open access publication fee is met by the respective institution.

Cancelling Open Choice after publication

Please note that an order of Open Choice during the 'MyPublication' pages cannot be cancelled.
